BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College and Washington and Lee battled to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in ODAC men's soccer action.
The two goals were scored less than one minute apart early in the first half of play.
Bridgewater struck first against the tough Generals defense when Ben Lewis took a through ball from Ethan McBryde and slid a shot past W&L keeper Albert Civitarese for a 1-0 Eagles lead at the 12:39 mark.
The lead didn't last long as less than a minute later W&L forward Zach Colby blasted a shot into the net from 30 yards out to tie the score at the 13:25 mark.
The score remained tied the rest of the way, but the Eagles had several solid looks at a score, especially in the first overtime session.
Andre Milla had a good opportunity in the 92nd minute but his shot sailed over the crossbar. In the 94th minute Adrian Zamora lofted a long pass downfield to Lewis who was able to get behind the defense, but his shot sailed high. Milla had another shot in the 96th minute but his attempt to beat the keeper to near past was just wide.
The Generals had their best opportunity in the second overtime when Eagles keeper Kevin Morris made a diving save on a shot by Justin TenBrook to keep the score tied.
The Generals held a 16-14 edge in shots, but the Eagles fired off seven shots in the two overtimes compared to just two for W&L. Bridgewater also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Morris finished the contest with five saves for the Eagles while Civitarese recorded three saves for W&L.
Bridgewater is now 3-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the ODAC. W&L is now 3-0-4 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
The Eagles are back in action Saturday evening when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to play Guilford College in an ODAC contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
