Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Senior forward Galen Goodman scored in the waning minutes on Tuesday evening but it wasn't enough as the Bridgewater Eagles (3-2) field hockey team fell to the fifth-ranked Eagles of the University of Mary Washington by a 5-1 score.
Mary Washington (8-0) got on the board when Ashlin Jones found the net off of a crossing pass from Haley Kane to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 13:49 mark.
Less than four minutes later, Christine Loehr added a goal to extend the Mary Washington lead to 2-0.
The Eagles tallied two more goals over the remainder of the first half to take a 4-0 lead into the locker room.
Out of the halftime break, Mary Washington continued to apply the offensive pressure, but senior Jessica Balsano turned away six Mary Washington shots in the first eight minutes to keep the game at a 4-0 score.
Loehr tallied her second goal of the game at the 51:40 mark to build a 5-0 Mary Washington advantage later in the half.
Following the Mary Washington goal, Bridgewater began to apply the pressure on the offensive end tallying a number of shots before Goodman found the back of the cage off of a pass from Alexandra Clement with 2:36 to play to cut the Mary Washington advantage to 5-1 which is how the game would end.
Despite being outshot in the first half, the Eagles kept things close on the offensive end in the second half, as Mary Washington owned a slim 8-5 advantage in shots over the final 35 minutes.
Goodman led the Bridgewater offense with three shots, while senior Colleen Dickson added a pair of shots on the evening.
Balsano was stellar in the cage, turning away 14 Mary Washington shots in the loss. The 14 saves for the Sandy Hook, Conn. native marks a season-high.
Loehr led the Mary Washington attack with two goals on six shots, while Emily Badis picked up the win, rejecting four Bridgewater shots over the first 57:26 of play. Megan McLaughlin played the final 12-plus minutes, allowing one goal on three shots.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday evening when it hosts Wilson College for the first home game for the Eagles at the newly renovated Jopson Athletic Complex. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
