Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Averett took a 2-0 lead early in the second half and held off the Bridgewater College Eagles, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
Averett scored first, stunning the Eagles defense with a goal with just 15 seconds left in the first half. Adil Iich squeezed a shot inside the near post to put the Cougars on the board.
The Cougars made it 2-0 early in the second half. Nathan Brown sent a pass into the box and Benjy Slator converted the goal at the 55:22 mark.
Less than 10 minutes later the Eagles scored to get back in the game. Sawyer Janes chipped a pass into the box as Max Chacon slid his shot past the Averett keeper to cut the margin to 2-1 at the 65:03 mark.
The Eagles' offense kept the pressure on Averett's defense in the final minutes, but was unable to score the tying goal.
Bridgewater held a 20-13 edge in shots, including a 13-4 advantage in the second half. The Eagles finished with nine corners, compared to just two for the Cougars.
Bridgewater keeper Mark Davis finished with three saves while Michael Decker recorded six saves for the Cougars.
Bridgewater, now 2-3 on the season, returns to action Saturday when it travels to play Southern Virginia University. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
