BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Sawyer Janes scored the game's lone goal in the 84th minute Saturday to lift the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Gettysburg College in a non-conference men's soccer contest.
The two teams were deadlocked in an evenly played contest as play was contained in the midfield for much of match. Good scoring opportunities were few as both defenses held solid throughout.
The Eagles scored the game-winner when Janes took a perfectly placed pass from Adrian Zamora and lofted the ball over the keeper's head for the goal.
"I was calling for a chip and Adrian couldn't have put the ball in a better spot," Janes said. "I was lucky to get a foot on it and get the shot past the keeper. Again, Adrian played a perfect ball."
The Bullets held a slim 11-10 edge in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Gettysburg also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Freshman keeper Mark Davis notched his first win of the season and recorded six saves on the day.
The Eagles bounced back to even their record at 1-1 following a tough 2-1 road loss on Friday to North Carolina Wesleyan.
"We needed a pick-me-up following Friday's loss," Janes said. "We fought really hard in that game and to come back today and do that again says a lot about the character of this team."
The Eagles return to action next weekend when they travel to St. Mary's College for the Seahawk Classic. Bridgewater plays St. Mary's on Saturday and Salisbury on Sunday,
Bridgewater's next home contest is Sept. 11 against Averett.
