Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Despite outshooting Lynchburg by a 13-7 margin in the second half, the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team couldn't overcome a pair of two-goal frames from the visiting Hornets as the Eagles fell by a 4-1 tally on Saturday afternoon at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
Lynchburg (13-4, 7-0 ODAC) went on the attack early in the contest before earning a penalty stroke just over four minutes into the game. Hornets defender Courtney Gilette put a shot into the back of the goal off of the stroke, beating Bridgewater goalie Jessica Balsano to the near-side post to build a 1-0 Lynchburg lead.
Kayla Krause added a goal for the Hornets at the 27:30 mark of the first half to build a 2-0 Lynchburg lead at the break.
Out of the intermission, Bridgewater (10-5, 4-2 ODAC) had a big opportunity to trim the deficit to a single goal when the Eagles earned a penalty stroke just over four minutes into the second half. Senior Colleen Dickson committed a foul during the act of taking the shot as the Lynchburg lead remained at a 2-0 tally early in the second frame.
After the missed opportunity, the Eagles kept up the intensity on the offensive end, pounding the Lynchburg goal over the opening 15 minutes of the half. Lynchburg netminder Jordan Seeley kept the Eagles off of the scoreboard during the barrage before a Nicole Marburger tally extended the Hornets lead to 3-0 early in the 49th minute.
Lynchburg added another goal at the 54:05 mark when Katie Kline found the back of the net to build a 4-0 lead midway through the second stanza.
Bridgewater had another opportunity late in the contest when the Eagles drew another penalty stroke. Junior Caroline Augsburger's stroke missed wide to the right to keep the contest at a 4-0 Lynchburg lead.
The Eagles finally got on the scoreboard after time expired in the contest. Off of a corner, senior Megan Gould found the back of the net to finalize the scoring in a 4-1 Bridgewater loss.
Gould's goal helped lead the Bridgewater offense on the afternoon as the Eagles tallied 17 shots in the game. Dickson added five shots to lead the Bridgewater offense.
Balsano made nine saves in the loss.
Marburger led the way for the Hornets with a goal and an assist, while Kline added a goal on five shots as Lynchburg owned a slim 19-17 edge in shots.
Seeley picked up her 13th win of the year, turning away seven Bridgewater shots on the afternoon. Hannah Myers also tallied a pair of saves in the contest.
Bridgewater is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Sweet Briar. Start time against the Vixens is set for 1 p.m. Sunday's contest also marks Senior Day for the Eagles.
