Tigers Slip Past Eagles In Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER. Va. – Hampden-Sydney erased an early one goal deficit Saturday afternoon as the Tigers rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory over the Bridgewater College Eagles in a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer matchup.

The two teams entered the contest with identical conference records and, with the victory, the Tigers gained the upper hand over the Eagles as teams jockey for spots in the upcoming conference tournament.

The Eagles struck first with a goal in the 11th minute. The Eagles' Ben Lewis took a shot from deep that was blocked by a defender. The ball caromed high into the air and Lewis chased down the rebound and booted a shot past Tigers' keeper Cameron McFarlane for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.

Bridgewater missed a chance to pad its lead when the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Adrian Zamora took the kick for the Eagles and McFarlane made a diving save to his right to keep the score at 1-0.

The Tigers kept pressure on the Bridgewater defense in the second half and were able to score the tying goal in the 66th minute.

Hampden-Sydney received a corner kick with Bryan Talbert doing the honors. Talbert's kick was headed by an Eagles' defender in an attempt to clear the ball out of the box. Leo Kowalski, however, took the ball out of the air and lined a shot just inside the near post to knot the score at 1-1.

The teams went to overtime tied at 1-1 and the Tigers needed just 1:09 to end the contest when Robert Stephens tallied the game-winner from 15 yards out. Robert Kerby recorded the assist on the winning goal.

The Tigers held a slim 17-15 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Bridgewater keeper Kevin Morris finished with three saves while McFarlane turned away seven shots for the Tigers.

The Eagles return to action Wednesday afternoon for Senior Day when they host rival Eastern Mennonite. Game time is 4 p.m.
