Box Score ROANOKE, Va. - Sophomore Rachael Loy scored the game-winning goal just over seven minutes into overtime to propel the Bridgewater Eagles (8-3, 2-1 ODAC) field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Roanoke Maroons on Friday evening.
Loy's goal extended her goal-scoring streak to three games and helped Bridgewater to its sixth consecutive victory over the Maroons.
Out of the gate, Bridgewater pounded the Roanoke (2-9, 1-3 ODAC) goal with shots, but couldn't get a shot by netminder Candace Fisher as the game remained scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play. Over the final 20 minutes of the first half, both teams had opportunities but neither could net the go-ahead goal as the game remained tied, 0-0, at the half.
Following a slow start to the game which saw the contest go into the break at a scoreless deadlock, it was Bridgewater taking control early in the second half.
At the 41:16 mark, senior Colleen Dickson got the Eagles on the board when she fired a shot into the back of the cage from the left side to build a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.
After the Dickson goal, the Maroons drew three corners before netting the tying goal in the 49th minute when Shelbi Holloman found the net from the left side to tie the contest up at a goal each.
Bridgewater responded by earning three corners of its own, but the Eagles couldn't get back on the board before the Maroons took the lead at the 51:42 mark. Roanoke drew a corner early in the 52nd minute before Alex DeFelice stroked a shot past the keeper off of a pass from Holloman to put the Maroons out in front, 2-1.
Roanoke continued to apply the pressure on the offensive end, but senior goalkeeper Jessica Balsano was up to the task, turning away three Maroons shots in the middle portion of the half to keep deficit at a single tally.
The Eagles went back on the attack over the final 10 minutes of regulation, earning numerous corners before tying the game up with under three minutes remaining in the second half. Off of the corner, sophomore Taylor Prillaman scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to tie the contest up at a 2-2 score with 2:33 remaining in regulation.
Both teams remained quiet over the final two and a half minutes of the second half as the game headed to an overtime session with the score tied, 2-2.
Bridgewater fired off a shot early in the overtime set, but Fisher turned away Prillaman's shot off of the corner to keep the game tied up at two goals each. The Eagles earned a pair of corners early in the first overtime, but couldn't net the go-ahead goal.
After the Maroons switched the field and earned a corner of their own, Bridgewater went back on the attack and Loy ripped a shot into the back of the cage from the right side to complete the comeback and earn a 3-2 win for the Eagles.
Junior Caroline Augsburger tallied four shots to lead the Bridgewater offense on the evening as the Eagles outshot Roanoke by a 12-9 tally. The Eagles also owned a sizeable 21-11 advantage in corners.
Balsano made five saves to earn the win for the Eagles.
Holloman paced the Roanoke offense with a goal on four shots, while Fisher made seven saves in the loss.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Shenandoah in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) affair at the Jopson Athletic Complex. Start time against the Hornets is set for 6 p.m.
