Eagles Hold Off Southern Virginia For 2-1 Victory

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team evened its season record at 1-1 with a 2-1 victory Wednesday over Southern Virginia University in non-conference action.

After a pair of storm delays that pushed the start time back more than one hour, the Eagles had a chance to take the lead early in the game.

The Eagles were awarded a corner in the third minute of play and Zach Hosler rifled a shot toward goal. The shot deflected off a defender and then bounced off the post. Logan McGlynn then got a foot on the rebound but his shot sailed high as the Knights dodged the early barrage.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the remainder of the first half, but the Eagles came out firing in the second half and got on the board early, scoring in the 52nd minute.

The Eagles had a throw in from the near sideline and Kevin Gorman tracked down the ball near the end line. Gorman flicked a pass to McGlynn and the BC freshman punched the ball into the open goal for a 1-0 Eagles lead.

The Eagles added their second goal in the 67th minute with some nifty passing against the Knights team that was playing a man down due to a red card moments after BC's first goal. Gerard Miniaci flicked a pass ahead to a streaking Sawyer Janes and Janes beat the keeper from close range for a 2-0 BC lead.

Despite playing a man down, the Knights started to pressure the Eagles defense late in the game. The visitors made it a one-goal game when Zac McCulloch headed in a pass from Nathaniel Sellis, making the score 2-1.

The Eagles escaped with the win as the Knights just missed a potential tying shot in the final minute. Southern Virginia had a corner kick with the clock approaching the one minute mark. Kyle Tyree put a shot on goal, but his attempt hit the crossbar and the Eagles ran off the final seconds to claim the 2-1 victory.

Bridgewater held a 19-12 edge in shot attempts while the Knights owned a slim 5-4 advantage in corners.

Eagles' goalie TJ Martin finished with five saves to record his first win of the season.

Bridgewater returns to action this weekend at the St, Mary's (Md.) Seahawk Invitational with games against St. Mary's and Salisbury.
