Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. - In Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) field hockey action at Shenandoah, junior Jennifer Tompkins found the back of the cage 10 minutes into the overtime session to hand the Bridgewater Eagles their fourth straight victory with a 3-2 overtime win over the Hornets.
Bridgewater's (5-3, 2-0 ODAC) four-game winning streak matches the program's best winning streak since a five-game run in 1998. The Eagles also won four straight games during the era of head coach Allyson Kenyon in 2004, 2005 and 2010.
Freshman Taylor Prillaman wasted little time in putting the Eagles on the board as the Magnolia, Del. native stuck a shot past the keeper off of a Colleen Dickson assist at the 2:08 mark of the contest to put Bridgewater up early by a 1-0 margin. Prillaman has scored in four straight games for the Eagles, and in five of the last six contests.
Bridgewater added to its lead with 17:55 to play in the opening stanza when Dickson pushed a pass to Galen Goodman and the junior beat the Shenandoah keeper to extend the Eagles' lead to 2-0.
Shenandoah (5-5, 0-2 ODAC) kept the pressure on Bridgewater at the offensive end but couldn't put a shot on frame over the game's first 35 minutes as the Eagles owned a 2-0 halftime lead.
Bridgewater held a slim 7-to-6 advantage in shots and the two teams were even in corners at five each in the first session.
Out of the intermission, play remained even with little on the offensive end for either team before a yellow card on Dickson gave the Hornets a man-up opportunity midway through the second half. Bridgewater's defense was up to the task with a man down, keeping the Shenandoah offense at bay to maintain a 2-0 lead.
Shenandoah finally got on the board in the 67th minute when Sarah DeLuca found the back of the cage off of a pass from Alexandra Darrow to cut the Bridgewater lead to 2-1 before the Hornets netted the equalizer with 11 seconds left in regulation off a shot from Hannah Johnson to send the game to an extra stanza.
Bridgewater had the first real opportunity of the extra session when a three-shot barrage from the Eagles nearly ended the contest. Freshman Rachael Loy, Tompkins and Prillaman each tallied shots but Shenandoah keeper Sarah Clare turned away each attempt to keep the game at a 2-2 deadlock.
Shenandoah again went a man-down when a yellow card pushed the Eagles into a 7-on-6 situation. Bridgewater capitalized on a two-on-one break when Tompkins found the net off of a pass from Caroline Augsburger at the 82:02 mark to send the Eagles home with the win.
Bridgewater outshot the host Hornets in the overtime session to own a 15-to-13 advantage in shots. Prillaman paced the Eagles offense with a goal and four shots, while Dickson added a pair of assists in the victory.
The Hornets were paced offensively by Amber VanHorn's six-shot effort.
In the cage, junior Jessica Balsano recorded one save to earn the victory. For the Hornets, Clare was exceptional in the loss, turning away eight Bridgewater scoring attempts.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday at Lynchburg. Start time against the Hornets is set for 7 p.m.
