BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Guilford, 2-1, in ODAC men's soccer action on a cold, damp Sunday afternoon.
The victory keeps the Eagles atop the ODAC standings with a 5-1 conference record. The Eagles are just ahead of Washington and Lee and Roanoke, both of which have 4-1-1 records.
The Quakers struck first, scoring in the 27th minute. Ronnie Castellanos found Freddy Gomez all alone in the box and ODAC's leading scorer delivered as he blasted a shot past Bridgewater goalie TJ Martin for a 1-0 Quakers lead.
The Eagles evened the scored late in the half when Adam Weisenborn headed a crossing pass from Derek Newsome past the Guilford keeper to tie the score at 1-1 at the 38:35 mark.
Bridgewater scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half. Newsome rolled a pass across the box toward the far post and a sliding Gerard Miniaci punched the ball into the net to put the Eagles on top 2-1 in the 53rd minute of play.
The Eagles defense kept the Quakers at bay the rest of the way with Martin recording a pair of saves.
Martin finished the contest with three saves while a pair of Guilford keepers finished the day with seven saves.
With the victory the Eagles improve to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in ODAC play. The Quakers fall to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles travel to Virginia Beach to play Virginia Wesleyan College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
