BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The visiting Maroons of Roanoke College got on the board first, but the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team tallied three unanswered goals to erase an early one-goal deficit and earn a 3-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Mapp Field.
Bridgewater (6-4, 3-1 ODAC) attacked the Roanoke goal early on but couldn't get on the board before Roanoke struck first in the seventh minute. With the ball floating in front of the net, Maroons forward Julienne Brown gathered the ball up and stuck it in the back of the cage to put Roanoke up 1-0 at the 6:20 mark.
Over the next 17-plus minutes, the Eagles continued to attack the Roanoke (2-8, 1-3 ODAC) net before the Maroons' defense finally broke down to allow the equalizer. At the 24:02 mark, junior Betsy Joslyn took a centering pass from Megan Gould and beat the Roanoke keeper to knot the score up at a goal each.
The contest was looking like it would go into the intermission tied, but junior Colleen Dickson put a shot on frame in the waning seconds of the first half and pushed her own rebound past the keeper with six ticks remaining in the first stanza to give Bridgewater a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Bridgewater controlled the first half of play, but only had a one-goal lead to show for it. The Eagles outshot Roanoke by a 17-to-2 margin over the first 35 minutes and owned a 6-0 edge in corners.
The final 35 minutes started off slow before both teams traded corners, but neither team could capitalize on the opportunity as Bridgewater maintained a 2-1 lead.
At the 46:52 mark, freshman Alenka Ferrufino made a quick one-touch pass to fellow freshman Taylor Prillaman and the Magnolia, Del. native did the rest, putting the ball in the back of the cage to extend the Bridgewater lead to 3-1 which is how the game would end. Prillaman's goal extended her goal scoring streak to six games, which is the highest total in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) this season.
Bridgewater outshot the visiting Maroons by a 22-to-2 tally and held Roanoke without a shot in the second half.
Dickson paced the Bridgewater attack with four shots and a goal on the afternoon, while Roanoke was led by the play of Brown.
Eagles netminder Jessica Balsano picked up the win for the Eagles, making one save on the day. Roanoke goalie Darian Shuker recorded 10 saves in the loss.
