Field Hockey Moves to Semifinal Round After 8-1 Win Over Roanoke

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team stuck five goals on the board in the first half and added three goals in the second half as the Eagles defeated visiting Roanoke College by an 8-1 score in Saturday's afternoon's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Quarterfinal matchup at Mapp Field.

Freshman Rachael Loy put the Eagles on the board at the 4:35 mark of the first half when she stuck an unassisted shot in the back of the net to put Bridgewater up by a 1-0 score.

Bridgewater added to its lead 45 seconds later when freshman Taylor Prillaman put a shot past the Roanoke keeper to extend the Eagles' lead to 2-0 at the 5:20 mark.

Following the second goal, the Maroons switched keepers, but the Eagles kept up the intensity on the offensive end. At the 8:42 mark of the first half, senior Kelly Ryan took a pass from Caroline Augsburger off of a corner insert and found the back of the net to build the Bridgewater lead to 3-0.

Junior Colleen Dickson got in on the scoring at the 23:10 mark when she rocked a shot past the Roanoke keeper on a breakaway to push the Eagles' advantage to 4-0.

The Eagles rounded out the first half of scoring with eight and change to play when Caroline Fletcher scored off of a pass from Joan Burleson on a corner to hand Bridgewater a 5-0 lead at the intermission.

Bridgewater outshot the visiting Maroons by a 14-to-4 margin across the opening 35 minutes of play. The Eagles also owned a 7-to-2 advantage in corners.

Out of the halftime break, Bridgewater wasted little time in adding to its lead when Ryan punched her second goal of the game in the back of the net, this time off of a pass from Augsburger, to build the lead to 6-0.

Just over seven minutes later, junior Jennifer Tompkins pushed the Bridgewater advantage to seven goals when she put a shot in off of a chip shot with 42:42 to play in the contest.

Roanoke finally got on the board at the 63:51 mark when Lianna Hachborn stuck a shot in the back of the cage to put the Maroons on the board and chip the Bridgewater lead to 7-1.

The Eagles rounded out the scoring on the afternoon when Galen Goodman scored on a pass from Tompkins to put the Eagles up 8-1 which is how the game would end.

Bridgewater outshot the Maroons by a 23-to-11 tally, paced by Ryan's two-goal performance.

Junior Jessica Balsano split time in the cage with Monck and turned away four Roanoke shots to earn the win.

Roanoke was led by Hachborn's five-shot, one-goal effort.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday at Randolph-Macon. Start time against the Yellow Jackets has yet to be determined.
