Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. - In a contest controlled by the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team, senior Joan Burleson scored late in the second half to hand the Eagles a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Sweet Briar.
Bridgewater (8-7, 5-2 ODAC) peppered the Vixens' goal early in the first half and drew eight corners over the first 17 minutes but couldn't find the back of the cage as the game remained scoreless midway through the opening half.
The Eagles continued its offensive barrage and ended the first half with 13 corners and 18 shots but the Sweet Briar goalie turned away 11 Bridgewater scoring attempts to keep the game scoreless at the intermission.
Out of the halftime break, the Eagles continued to push the pace on the offensive end before Burleson cleaned up a scrum in front of the Sweet Briar goal and stuck a shot in the back of the cage to put the Eagles up 1-0 at the 60:57 mark.
Sweet Briar (1-11, 0-7 ODAC) looked to answer the Bridgewater goal when Loralei Whitaker posted the lone shot of the game for the Vixens, but junior Jessica Balsano was up to the task, turning away the Sweet Briar shot to maintain a 1-0 lead which is how the game would end.
Freshman Alenka Ferrufino led the offense with seven shots on the afternoon as the Eagles outshot Sweet Briar by a 33-to-1 tally. Bridgewater also owned a 22-to-1 advantage in corners.
Balsano made one save in the victory to post her seventh win of the year, while Sweet Briar netminder Katie Torretti made 23 saves in the loss.
Bridgewater is back in action on Sunday at Hood College. Action against the Blazers is set for 2:30 p.m.
