BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Averett scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute Saturday afternoon to edge Bridgewater College, 4-3, in a non-conference soccer contest.
The Eagles had the better of the play in the early going as their first shot of the game by Kevin Gorman (Annapolis, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) bounced off the crossbar.
Bridgewater got on the board first when Ryan Pigg (Amherst, Va./Amherst) headed in a free kick by Zach Malpass (Chatham, Va./Chatham) in the eighth minute of play for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.
The Cougars then evened the score on a goal by Justin Pierce in the 15th minute. The next 30 minutes of play were scoreless as the teams went to the break tied a 1-1.
Averett took the lead on an early second-half goal by Mark Anthony Liljeklev and then padded the lead on a goal by Richard Bjornander in the 58th minute to take a two-goal advantage.
The Eagles were not quite finished as two goals in a four-minute span tied the score.
Kevin Gorman scored in the 62nd minute to pull BC to within one goal and Nathan Lane (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) tied the score in the 66th minute when his shot from 25 yards out went over the keeper's hand and into the top right corner of the net, making the score 3-3.
The Cougars scored what proved to be the game-winner when Marcus Ferngren found the back of the net in the 74th minute for a 4-3 Averett lead.
Averett held an 18-13 edge in shots and a 10-3 edge in corners.
Bridgewater keeper Travis Morris (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) finished with six saves.
The Eagles are now 3-6 on the season while Averett improves to 6-1-1.
