ROANOKE, Va. – Despite being plagued by cramps throughout the match, senior Tim Gower was on the court with the contest on the line and came up with a big win to push the Bridgewater Eagles men's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over host Roanoke College.
Roanoke took a 2-1 lead after doubles action with Bridgewater's lone win coming in an 8-4 victory at number two.
Sophomore Peter Hawkins picked up a big win to open singles action with a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win over Jon Roy.
Roanoke regained the lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at number two, before Brent Floyd posted a tight 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win in a three-set thriller at number three.
In the final three matches, Bridgewater came up with two huge wins starting with a 6-2, 6-2 win from Teddy Callow at number four.
At number six, Roanoke was victorious by a 6-1, 6-1 score, before Gower claimed a gutsy 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3 win at number five to give Bridgewater a 5-4 win.
The win pushes Bridgewater's win streak to four.
Bridgewater, 11-6 overall and 6-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, is back in action on Friday when it hosts St. Mary's (Md.)
