BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Junior Joan Burleson scored with just under five minutes left in the first extra session as the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team picked up a 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Shenandoah on Homecoming Saturday at Mapp Field.

Shenandoah tallied the first goal of the game in the latter portion of the first half when Sarah DeLuca took a Megan Garrett pass and beat the keeper to put the Eagles down 1-0 at the intermission.

In the waning minutes of the second half, Bridgewater's offense kept up the intensity before it finally paid off when Megan Gould took a Kelly Ryan pass and beat the keeper off of a corner insert to knot the game up at a 1-1 tally with under eight minutes left in regulation. Neither team could tally the game-winner in regulation, pushing the contest to an extra set.

Midway through the extra frame, Burleson fired a shot past the Hornets keeper to seal the deal, giving Bridgewater a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Bridgewater outshot Shenandoah by a 17-to-7 margin in the win and owned a 14-to-6 edge in corners.

Offensively, Jennifer Bateman's four shots paced the way. Shenandoah was paced by DeLuca's two shots on the day.

In the cage, senior Taylor Waddell was solid recording five saves in the win.  Sarah Clare picked up the loss for the Hornets, turning away five shots along the way.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday, October 19 when it travels to Randolph-Macon. Action is set for a 3:30 p.m. start.
