Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Lynchburg College scored two
goals in the second half Wednesday to turn back a determined effort
by the Bridgewater College Eagles, 2-0, in ODAC women's soccer
action.
The teams went to the half tied at 0-0 after an evenly played
first 45 minutes. Lynchburg held a slim 7-5 edge in shots and each
team had three shots on goal.
The Eagles had two huge opportunities to score early in the
game. Jacey
Kelley (Road Newburg, PA/Shippinsburg) floated a shot
toward goal from 25 yards and Lynchburg keeper Jackie Bader made a
leaping save to stop the attempt.
The Hornets countered when Jessica Gonzalez ripped a shot toward
goal from 30 yards out, but the ball hit the crossbar as the score
remained tied.
Bridgewater had one more chance when Caroline Banks
(Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan Catholic) put a shot on goal
but the ball was cleared off the goal line by a Lynchburg
defender.
The Hornets controlled action in the second half, holding a 13-2
edge in shots.
Bridgewater's defense held strong until Betsy Kwiatkowski found
the net at the 66:48 mark to put the Hornets on top, 1-0.
Lynchburg added an insurance goal in the 76th minute when
Gonzalez headed in a goal off a corner kick from Jill Melanson,
making the score 2-0.
Lynchburg is now 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC while
Bridgewater drops to 2-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
