Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan
scored a pair of goals in the second half Wednesday to defeat the
Bridgewater College Eagles, 2-0, in ODAC women's soccer action.
The Bridgewater defense was up to the task in the first half as
the teams finished the first 45 minutes tied at 0-0. The Marlins
held an 11-1 edge in shots but Bridgewater keeper Cari Hensley
(Danville, Va./George Washington) turned away four of those shots
to keep the teams deadlocked.
The Marlins continued to control play in the second half and the
pressure finally paid off when Courtney Whorten found the back of
the net from 20 yards out at the 54:48 mark, giving the visitors a
1-0 lead.
The Eagles kept it a one-goal game until the Marlins added an
insurance goal at the 76:51 mark when Hanna Winkel scored off an
assist from Whorten to make the score 2-0.
The Marlins held a 19-4 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in
corner kicks. Hensley finished the contest with eight saves for the
Eagles while Marlins keeper Rachel Calkins recorded one save.
The Eagles are now 8-7-1 overall and 7-3 in the ODAC. Virginia
Wesleyan improves to 10-3-3, 8-1-1 in the conference.
Bridgewater closes out its regular season Saturday when it
travels to Lexington, Va., to meet Washington and Lee. Game time is
set for noon.
