BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Five different players found
the back of the net as the Bridgewater Eagles (6-3, 1-2 ODAC) field
hockey team picked up its first ODAC win of the season, defeating
visiting Sweet Briar (1-7, 0-2 ODAC) by a 5-0 score at Mapp Field.
BC scored early and often, with freshman Joan Burleson
kick-starting the scoring with her second goal of the year at the
12:12 mark to put BC ahead 1-0.
Less than four minutes later, sophomore Allison Carr found the
back of the net off a pass from Brianna Jacques to give Bridgewater
a 2-0 lead, which is where the game would stay until the
intermission. Carr's goal was the first of her career.
Bridgewater would strike early in the second half, when Leah
Cossentino netted the third goal of the game at the 48:03 mark to
give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.
Senior Christina Pybus added to BC's lead at the 56:51 mark when
she netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season to put the
Eagles up 4-0.
Midfielder Jennifer Bateman rounded out the scoring on the
day when she netted her second goal of the year at the 64:55 mark,
pushing the BC advantage to 5-0.
Bridgewater's 5-0 victory was its third-highest goal output of
the season.
In the cage, sophomore Taylor Waddell (3-2) picked up the
victory, turning away three Vixen shots, to earn her first shutout
of the season.
Sweet Briar keeper Madeline Wilson picked up the loss, allowing
all five BC goals, while recording 13 saves.
Bridgewater outshot Sweet Briar by a 24-4 margin.
BC is back in action on Thursday when the Eagles travel to
Randolph-Macon for an ODAC showdown with the Yellow Jackets. Game
time is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start. Bridgewater split with
Randolph-Macon last year, losing at home in the regular season
before defeating the Yellow Jackets in the ODAC tournament first
round game at Randolph-Macon.
