Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan scored two first-half goals
Tuesday and held on to defeat Bridgewater College, 2-0, in ODAC
women's soccer action.
There were few scoring opportunities for either side in the
first 15 minutes of action, but the Marlins were able to strile
first when Blaze Byrd scored at the 27:50 mark.
The Marlins added a huge goal in the final minute of the half
when Krista Witmer scored off Katie Gradel's corner to give
Virginia Wesleyan a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Eagles had a chance to cut the defict with about 20 minutes
left to play, but Megan Groos' penalty kick bounced off the
crossbar. Bridgewater kept the pressure on down the stretch, but
Marlins' goalkeeper Allison Lennox recorded a pair of saves to
preserve the shutout.
The Marlins held a 15-8 advantage in shots and 6-3 edge in shots
on goal. Virginia Wesleyan also held a 4-3 edge in corners.
BC goalkeeper Cari Hensley finished with four saves while Lennox
finished with three saves for VWC.
The Eagles are now 9-3-1 overall and 3-2 in the ODAC. The
Marlins improve to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
