Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls Short to St. Mary's (Md.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Bridgewater College field hockey fell short to St. Mary's (Md.) 2-1 on the road in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles have begun the season with an 0-3 setback.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 1, St. Mary's (SMC) 2

Records: BCE (0-3), SMC (3-0)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles found the struggle of limiting the Seahawk's attack and possession chances throughout the game and put BCE at risk of falling short in a tight matchup. In the first quarter, SMC took advantage of their three penalty corners and worked around the field to counter each attack that the Eagles forced their way. SMC took the opening lead at the 6:23 mark and kept the lead after the first quarter.

  • Both squads traded penalty corners in the second quarter and could not find a comfortable position to take stride in this game. The first half ended with SMC holding a 1-0 lead.

  • In the third quarter, the Eagles began to string together crisp passes and aggressive plays in the shooting circle and finally mustered up a powerful shot towards goal. Off a penalty corner Carynn Klingler took a rip at goal and hit the back of the board to knot the score up at one apiece and close out the third quarter.

  • The Seahawks did not waste time getting set in the fourth quarter quickly getting into dangerous territory on BCE's half. SMC got the leading goal three minutes into the quarter and held strong enough to hold off BCE's attacking plays to end the game in a tight finish, 2-1.

Game Notes

  • Bridgewater out shot SMC in both the second quarter and the fourth quarter but fell short in total shots being clipped to a 16-12 advantage for the Seahawks.

  • Aggressive action consumed this matchup with 92 fouls.
