Women's Soccer Scores a Dozen in ODAC Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team opened their conference slate with a 12-0 victory over Hollins Wednesday evening. 

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 12, Hollins 0 

Records: Bridgewater (7-1, 1-0 ODAC), Hollins (2-4, 0-1 ODAC) 

How it Happened 

  • BC started their offensive assault 19 seconds into the match when Laura Narby found nylon from an assist from Lyric Birkley. Birkley also found the back of the net in the opening seconds off an assist from Katherine King. In the second minute of the match, Narby added a tally to the Eagles score.  

  • Birkley added to her scoring tally in the ninth minute off an assist from Sophia Phillips.  

  • At the ten-minute mark, Brianna Curro scored her first career goal from an assist by Birkley. 

  • Shortly before being subbed out for the remainder of the match, Kendall Garza found the back of the net in the 21st minute off an assist from Jillian Crow. 

  • In the 23rd minute, Audrey Maggio found the back of the net for the first time in her career off an assist from Curro to put double digits on the scoreboard for the Eagles. 

  • Hollins had their only shot attempt of the half at the 25:57 mark when Valtinique Simmons sent a shot just below the crossbar, but it found the gloves of BC keeper Micah Stine. 

  • Aliana Ferreira found the back of the net for the second time in her career at the 36:38 mark.  

  • BC switched to Rylee Asiello in between the pipes in the second half. Hollins took the first shot of the second half in the 65th minute. It was saved by Asiello.  

  • At the 74:26 mark, a handball was committed in the box, leading to a penalty shot from CJ Sipling. Sipling was able to find the back of the net for BC's twelfth and final goal of the match. 

Match Notes 

  • The Eagles notched 12 goals from 10 different scorers. The 12 goals from BC were the most scored in a game since Sept. 17, 2022, when the Eagles notched 14 goals against N.C. Wesleyan. In the 14-0 victory, the Eagles had seven different scorers, including Garza and Birkley, who were then only freshmen. Birkley recorded four goals, which is tied for the second-most in a single match in BC history. 

  • Asiello made her first appearance in between the poles for the Eagles in the second half. The sophomore keeper only faced one shot. 

  • Bridgewater ripped 22 shots in the match compared to Hollins' 3. Of the 22 shots, 14 were on target. The Eagles only mustered one shot in the second half, coming from CJ Sipling's penalty shot.  

  • Coming into the match, Lyric Birkley had a career total of 88 points. After earning six in this matchup, she now has the third-most points in program history with 94. Birkley needs 19 more points to become the all-time leading points-getter in program history. Her two goals also put her one-mark shy of tying the fourth-most (38) in program history. Her two assists put Birkley at 20 for her career, good for sixth in program history.

The Eagles travel to Virginia Beach to face Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed on FloCollege.
