Men's Soccer Falls to Mary Washington

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's soccer team fell to Mary Washington 0-3 Wednesday evening. This was the final match of BC's out-of-conference slate of matches to begin the season. 

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 0, Mary Washington 3 

Records: Bridgewater (5-2-1), Mary Washington (4-5) 

How it Happened 

  • In the fourth minute, Riley Queen took the first scoring opportunity of the match. He sent a shot to the goal, but it met the gloves of UMW keeper Tristan Kickbush. In the following minutes, UMW saw three consecutive scoring opportunities, but each were off the mark.  

  • At the 32:57 mark, Jack Sturman found the back of the net to put UMW on the board. Mary Washington had a couple more shots before the end of the half, but both were off the mark. 

  • In the opening minutes of the second half, Anthony Medrano put a shot on target, but it was saved by the Mary Washington goalkeeper. In the 56th minute, Gerry Vayoli found nylon to put Mary Washington up 2-0.  

  • Erick Lobo had two consecutive scoring opportunities. One was blocked by a UMW defender, and the other was saved by the keeper.  

  • In the 62nd minute, Mary Washington scored their third and final goal of the match. In the closing minutes, Daniel Hernandez, Erick Lobo, and Will Flores each put shots on the mark, but to no avail.  

Match Notes 

  • For the second consecutive match, Bridgewater found themselves on the losing end of the shot battle. UMW posted 14 shots in the match compared to  BC's nine. However, Bridgewater managed to put six on target, while UMW only put three on target.  

  • Bridgewater applied plenty of pressure to UMW's back line in the second half. The Eagles mustered five shots in the second half compared to one in the first.  

  • This was the first time this season where BC allowed 3+ goals.  

  • With the result from this match, BC finished their out of conference slate of matches with a 5-2-1 record. 

  • Davis Bashore played all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Eagles.  

What's Next? 

Bridgewater heads to Lynchburg, Va. To begin their ODAC slate of matches. They will face Randolph on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on FloCollege.
