Women's Soccer Flies Past Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team prevailed over the Southern Virginia Knights 3-1 Thursday night. The Eagles finished their beginning of the season non-conference slate with a 6-1 record. 
 
The Basics

How it Happened 
  • The beginning of the match mainly took place in the Bridgewater defensive half. In the opening ten minutes, SVU took a couple of shots, but neither were on target. In the tenth minute, the Knights' Courtney Montes was able to find the back of the net to give SVU an early lead.  
  • At the 39:40 mark, Villafan took a corner kick for the Eagles. She found Sienna Smith, who then booted a pass into the box, finding the head of Birkley.  
  • In the 60th minute of the contest, Birkley sent a pass inside to Narby, who found the back of the net. 
Match Notes 
  • Despite being the aggressors in the opening minutes of the half, SVU only took four shots in the first half, only one of them being on target. Bridgewater took 11 shots in the first half alone, with six being on goal. BC took 20 total shots with 11 being on target. 
  • Narby scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season in this match.  
  • With her goal and assist, Birkley now has 88 career points, tying Julia Baca for the fourth most in program history. Her assist also put her in a tie with Sara Taylor for the 7th most assists in program history (18).  
  • Freshman keeper Erinn Lockard earned her sixth career win, tying Chelsea Steek for the tenth most in program history.  
What's Next? 
  • The Eagles host their first ODAC match of the season against Hollins on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. The match will be streamed live on FloCollege.
