How It Happened
- Mackenzie Cauthorn got the call in the circle, but Roanoke threatened early as a walk and a double put two runners in scoring position with one out. Cauthorn got out of the jam, but the Eagles got nothing going offensively to respond.
- The Maroons opened the second with a triple and a squeeze play at the plate saw Roanoke convert and take a 1-0 lead with one out in the second frame. Maggie McCray kept dealing as BC went down in order in the home half of the second.
- Cauthorn regrouped after giving up a run and left a Maroon stranded in the top of the third. Two strikeouts put BC behind the ball to open the bottom of the third, but Skyler Buzbee was tagged by a pitch to extend the frame. CarolineMalandra followed with a walk to put two runners on and Cauthorn got her own run support to follow as she singled up the middle and pinch-runner Sarah Kate Tozier rounded third and scored to tie the game at 1-1.
- Both pitchers locked in with the newly tied game as both registered strikeouts in the fourth as it went by scoreless. Roanoke had a chance to take the lead in the top of the fifth with two runners on and two away. Cauthorn induced a flyout to end the threat and the game remained tied. RC threatened again in the sixth, but a pop up bunt to Cauthorn in the circle led to a double play as the runner did not tag in time.
- McCray continued to deal as she retired the side in the bottom of the sixth and did so in the seventh on strikes to send the contest to extra innings. Roanoke did not get a runner on in the eighth, but Leiah Branch was tagged by a pitch to open the home half and the Eagles were in business. Abby Byrum laid down a bunt to move the pinch runner Aniella Baldwin to second with one down. McCray regrouped as a strikeout and a comebacker ended the frame and the game moved on.
- Both teams went down in order in the ninth and then the international tiebreak runner came into play in the th. THe Maroons pounced on the chance as they attempted to lay down a bunt, but the throw to the bag was off target to allow runners to be on the corners with no outs. A sacrifice fly drove in a run to make it 2-1 for Roanoke before a pair of putouts by McKenna Mueller at short stop ended the frame. BC responded with one away as Jordan Wise lined a ball that found grass in right field to drive in Jazmyne Smith a tie the game at 2-2. ABby Byrum walked with two gone to put the go ahead runner on second once again, but Roanoke got out of the jam after an infield pop up.
- Roanoke's offense went to work in the top of the 11th. RC used the sacrifice bunt to move the runner over, but it did not matter as a triple followed to put Roanoke in front once again. A pair of walks loaded the bases and another triple followed to pus the Roanoke lead to 6-2. A double play ended the threat and kept the gap in reach. Cauthorn drew a one out walk to join Buzbee on the base paths in the 11th and Mueller reached on an error to load the bases with one gone. Smith followed with a clutch double off the wall in left to drive in two Eagles and slice the lead in half. Roanoke regrouped after an attempted mound visit as McCray got another strikeout and a groundout to short ended the frame.
