Softball Knocks Off No. 12 Randolph-Macon

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team split a pair of games with No. 12 Randolph-Macon on Tuesday.

Game 1
The Basics
Score:
Game 1: No. 12 Randolph-Macon 9, Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 19-10 (9-2 ODAC), No. 12 Randolph-Macon 26-3 (11-0 ODAC)
How It Happened
  • Randolph-Macon jumped on the board right away as a single to open the game, and a double to follow made it 1-0 for the Yellow Jackets before BC got an out. Elena Williams quickly regrouped, but another RMC double with two away made it 2-0 for the visitors.
  • BC went down in order in the bottom of the first, and the Yellow Jackets pounced. A leadoff single for RMC, along with a stolen base and a wild pitch, moved the runner around to third with one out. Bridgewater got the second out, but a single up the middle drove the runner in to make it 3-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets tagged on three more runs in the top of the third, including a two-run home run by Kayla Davis to make it 6-0. Gracie Ellis was dealing for RMC and had not surrendered a baserunner with two gone in the third, but Carline Malandra broke up the perfect-game bid with a walk after a long at bat. Ellis left her stranded at first after a pop-up to second base.
  • Bridgewater got the opening out of the top of the fourth, but Randolph-Macon added to the lead with three runs in the frame. The Yellow Jackets had crueler intentions, but a runner was tagged out on her way to third after a two-run single by Davis as RMC took a 9-0 advantage.
  • McKenna Mueller broke up the no-hit bid in the bottom of the fourth with a single with one away. Lexi Schaaf came to the dish with two away and flew out to deep left, but the fielder dropped the ball, allowing Mueller to score to get BC on the board. The Eagles sat RMC down in order in the top of the fifth and put runners on after a pitching change for the Yellow Jackets. Malandra and Mackenzie Cauthorn both singled, but they were left stranded.
Match Notes
  • Williams (3-2) took the loss after 2.0 innings of work and surrendering five runs. Three different Eagles tallied hits in the game one loss, including Malandra, who reached safely both of her trips to the dish.
  • Davis led RMC at the plate as she went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs in game one. Ellis picked up her 15th win of the season after tossing the first 4.0 innings and allowing a single unearned run.
Game 2
Score: Bridgewater 3, No. 12 Randolph-Macon 2
Records: Bridgewater 20-10 (10-2 ODAC); No. 12 Randolph-Macon 26-4 (11-1 ODAC)
  • Cauthorn got the call in game two and answered the bell. The Yellow Jackets went down in order to open the second contest, and BC's starter started her own run support with a walk to leadoff the bottom of the first. Cauthorn stole second and rolled around to third after a groundout. RMC got the second out of the frame, and Cauthorn was still on third, but Jazmyne Smith delivered with a double off the wall to drive in Cauthorn. Jordan Wise followed with a single during the next at bat, and a wild throw by RMC allowed Smith to score to make it 2-0.
  • RMC drew a walk to lead off the second and moved the runner around to third with one out. The Yellow Jackets drew another walk to put runners on the corners, but a groundout and a strikeout retired the side. BC went down in order in the second, and RMC drew another walk to open the third, but the runner was stranded.
  • Malandra singled with one away in the home half of the third thanks to her speed. Mueller followed with what should have been a single up the middle, but the center fielder made a bad read on the ball, allowing it to roll to the wall. Maandra scored, and Mueller pulled into third and had the Eagles rocking. RMC made a call to the bullpen, and Ellis trotted back out and got the final two outs of the frame with ease.
  • Randolph-Macon opened the top of the fourth with consecutive hits to out two runners in scoring position. Cauthorn regrouped and fired off nine-straight strikes to retire the side. Ellis put BC down in order in the fourth, and RMC struck back. A two-out double gave the Yellow Jackets life, and a single down the line in left drove in the runner from second to make it 3-1. RMC loaded the bases later in the frame, but a nifty stop and a tag on third by Andrea Savage ended the frame.
  • BC continued to struggle at the plate as Ellis was dealing. The Eagles did not get a base runner and Randolph-Macon got the gam to the seventh still trailing by just a pair. Cauthorn got two quick outs, but after a mound visit, Davis belted her second home run of the day to slice the lead in half. An infield single and an error put the tying and go-ahead runs on. Cauthorn regrouped and got the next batter to pop up just behind the plate, and Skyler Buzbee put the squeeze on it to secure the Eagles' second victory over a ranked opponent in as many seasons.
Match Notes
  • Cauthorn (9-5) picked up the victory for the Eagles, allowing seven hits and striking out seven over 136 pitches. Four different Eagles recorded hits for the Eagles, but Smith tallied BC's only RBI.
  • Guthrie (9-2) took the loss for RMC as she allowed just a single earned run in 2.1 innings of work. Ellis' relief effort saw her face the minimum and record six strikeouts.
