LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team took a pair of games from Randolph on Saturday.
GAME 1
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 1; Randolph 0
Records: Bridgewater 21-10 (11-2 ODAC); Randolph 5-24 (3-10 ODAC)
How It Happened
- BC opened the game with a runner on right away as Mackenzie Cauthorn reached on an error, but a double play ended the Eagles' chance. Cauthorn went to work in the circle and put Randolph down in order.
- The Eagles loaded the bases with one away in the top of the second thanks to singles from Jordan Wise and Kaelyn Ramsey, while Leaih Branch was tagged by pitch. BC squandered the chance as the WildCats got a strikeout and a pop up to retire the side. The home side put two runners on in the home half of the frame, but a strikeout by Cauthorn and a ground out silenced the WildCats.
- Bridgewater put a runner on as Caroline Malandra drew a one-out walk. The sophomore then stole second and third before a sacrifice fly from McKenna Mueller drove in her in to get the Eagles on the board. BC loaded the bases later in the inning, but a ground ball ended the frame in the WildCats favor once again.
- Both teams settled in, but the Eagles had multiple chances to extend the lead, including leaving a runner stranded at third in the top of the fifth and seventh. Randolph put the potential game-tying run on with a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout ended the frame and secured the game one win for BC.
Match Notes
- Cauthorn (10-5) picked up the win in the circle after going the advertised distance and surrendering just three hits. Ramsey and Jazmyne Smith each tallied a pair of hits for BC in the victory. Mueller drove in the Eagles' lone run, while Malandra swiped three bags.
- Moran (3-7) took the loss for the WildCats after going the first five innings and allowing five hits. Three different WildCats accounted for the squads' three hits.
GAME 2

Score: Bridgewater 7; Randolph 1
Records: Bridgewater 22-10 (12-2 ODAC); Randolph 5-25 (4-10 ODAC)
How It Happened
- BC had a chance to strike first as Cauthorn opened game two with a single and a walk put Malandra on with no outs. A groundout moved the runners over and a hit from Smith followed. BC looked to be aggressive on the base paths off the hit, but Cauthorn was tagged out on her way in to score and RC escaped unscathed.
- Randolph got on the board in its half of the first as a walk and an error put two runners on with one out. A groundout moved the runners into scoring position and a single through the right side made it 1-0 for Randolph. A strikeout by Evelyn Rhoads in the circle left two runners stranded and ended the WildCats' chance.
- Both pitchers settled in before Mueller opened the top of the fourth with a single. Smith followed with a poke of her own and a bunt from Wise moved the runners into scoring position, Lexi Schaaf followed with a double in the next at bat and pushed both runs across to give the Eagles the lead at 2-1. Schaaf moved over to third, but she was put out trying to score later in the inning. Aniella Baldwin came up later in the inning and drove in Ramsey to extend the lead to 3-1.
- Randolph had a runner on via the walk in the bottom of the fourth, but she was left stranded. BC put two runners on to open the top of the fifth as Malandra walked and Mueller singled. Malandra moved to third after tagging up on a flyball to leave runners on the corners. BC put on the double steal and executed to perfection as Malndra scored and Mueller reached second safely to make it 4-1.
- The WildCats had a chance to strike back in the bottom of the fifth, but a relay led by Baldwin fouled their chances. BC added on in the seventh as Schaaf delivered again, but this time with the bases loaded. A double by the catcher cleared the bases to blow the game open to a 7-1 gap. Randolph had two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout back to Rhoads ended the threat.
Match Notes
- Rhodes (7-2) was credited with the win after going the full distance and allowing six hits and striking out five. Mueller led the offensive onslaught in game two with three of BC's 13 hits in game two. Schaaf drove in five runs as well to fuel the offense.
- Humble (0-4) was credited for the loss after allowing six earned runs. Lucado was the only WildCat to register multiple hits in either game.
