SALEM, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team swept Roanoke in a pair of games for the first time since 2011 on Saturday.
Game 1
The Basics
Score: Game 1: Bridgewater 2, Roanoke 0
Records: Bridgewater 18-9 (8-1 ODAC), Roanoke 14-11 (5-4 ODAC)
How It Happened
- Mackenzie Cauthorn made her debut in the leadoff spot for the Eagles and opened game one with a single and advanced to third before she was left stranded. Cauthorn went to work in the circle for BC and allowed a pair of base runners via the free pass, but a fielder's choice and a flyout got her out of the jam.
- BC left runners stranded in the second and the third, while Cauthorn kept the Maroons off the base paths for the two frames.
- Jordan Wise led off the top of the fourth with a single to center field, and a sacrifice bunt moved her into scoring position. Kaelyn Ramsey stepped in next and doubled down the line in left field to drive in Wise and break the scoreless deadlock. With two down and Ramsey on second, Caroline Malandra reached on an error to flip the order over. A single by Cauthorn pushed across Ramsey to make it 2-0.
- The Maroons ended the runner drought with a bunt to open the home half of the fourth, but once again the Eagles escaped unscathed. Jazymne Smith singled for the Eagles in the top of the fifth, but her pinch runner, Molly Ecroyd, was stranded at second.
- Roanoke had its best chance to strike in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second, and a wild pitch later in the frame pushed the runner to third with two outs, but a groundout to Malnadra at the hot corner ended the chance. RC had just one base runner over the final two frames as Cauthorn and the Eagles' defense held on to take game one.
Match Notes
- Cauthorn (8-5) took the victory in the circle while also going 2-for-4 at the dish and driving in a run. Smith, Wise, Ramsey and Malandra all registered a hit for the Eagles as well in the victory.
- Gedro (5-4) took the loss for the Maroons after going the advertised distance. Roanoke tallied just two hits, as the Maroons were limited to a .105 batting average (2-for-19) as a unit.
Game 2
Score: Bridgewater 1, Roanoke 0
Records: Bridgewater 19-9 (9-1 ODAC); Roanoke 14-12 (5-5 ODAC)
- Bridgewater went down in order at the plate to open game two, while the Maroons got a runner in scoring position in the home half of the frame on a two-out double. A flyout to Abby Byrum in center ended the chance.
- The Eagles had an opportunity to strike in the top of the second with a pair of two-out singles, but Wise and Buzbee were left stranded. Roanoke had a runner aboard in the bottom of the second and third, but left all of them stranded.
- McKenna Mueller led off the top of the fourth with a single and worked her way to second with no outs, but a pair of strikeouts foiled the Eagles' opening. Once again, Roanoke had a runner on in the bottom of the fourth, but she was also left standing on first. Buzbee opened the top of the fifth with a single, but she too did not advance past second.
- The pitcher's duel continued into the bottom of the fifth as Evelyn Rhoads got the call out of the bullpen for Kylie Jones. The Maroons popped out three straight times, and BC looked to break through. Aniella Baldwin walked to open the top of the sixth and stole second with one away. Lily Moyers came to the plate to pinch hit and delivered once again. The rookie tripled to left field to drive in Baldwin and make it 1-0 for the good guys. The Eagles could not move Moyers 60 feet to score as she was stranded.
- Roanoke did not go down quietly as back-to-back singles for the home side, along with a BC error, put two runners in scoring position with two away. Rhoads regrouped, and her defense helped her out with a lineout to left field, to the wrong person, to keep the lead intact. The Eagles left a pair of runners stranded in scoring position in the top of the seventh, and Roanoke looked to strike, being just a swing away from tying the game. A walk opened the bottom of the seventh, and the Maroons bunted and grounded out to move the runner over to third with two outs. Rhoads delivered with a strikeout to secure the sweep and strand the potential game-tying run at third.
Match Notes
- Rhoads (6-2) picked up the victory after three innings of relief work as her only strikeout came on the final out of the contest. Moyers delivered with her second go-ahead base hit of the season in her only at bat. Buzbee was the only Eagle with multiple hits (2) in game two.
- McCray (7-4) took the loss for the Maroons despite tallying 12 strikeouts in game two. Vaughn accounted for two of the Maroons four hits.
