Baseball Finds Offensive Boost to Take Strong Win Over EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Bridgewater baseball blazed through the ODAC rival matchup against EMU to take a commanding 15-6 win led by three long balls Wednesday.

The Eagles won 15-6 in another ODAC matchup on the road.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 15, Eastern Mennonite 6

Records: BCE (22-10-1 OVR, 12-4-1 ODAC), EMU (9-20 OVR, 4-13 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles caught fire in late innings to pull ahead with a comfortable lead which was kicked off by three home runs by Ashton Smith, Jake Harris, and Zack Chadwell. With the dominant offensive surge early, the Eagles had little to worry about losing their lead despite a few runs from the opposition. The pitching held firm, and BCE sent it to a large enough lead for the game to be called with darkness creeping up.

  • As soon as the firing squad from Bridgewater got going, the game got out of reach quickly after the second inning. A big six-run inning gave the Eagles breathing room. Ashton Smith got the scoring off to a strong start with a solo deep shot over the center field fence. Chandler Valbak set up Jake Harris nicely, lacing a single to reach first and Harris did the rest; launching a two-run homer to make the score stand at 3-0. The inning continued as Bransen Hensley added to the excitement with an RBI double to left field scoring in Bryce Suters.

  • Zack Chadwell closed out the dominant frame cracking a third home run bringing home Hensley to boost the game to a 6-0 lead. EMU had a short offensive burst of its own in the second inning with a two-run double and a walk with bases loaded. However, Lucas Cash handled the pressure effectively, getting out of the jam with a strikeout swinging.

  • The Royals made it a two-run game in the fourth inning with an RBI single, but the Eagles remained in control. In the fifth, BCE came back with active bats, lifting the lead to 8-4 on a two-run double by Nick Stavros. BCE continued to apply aggressive at bats resulting in bases loaded in the sixth inning. Trent Holland came around to score on a wild pitch giving the Eagles a steady five-run advantage. Although the Royals mustered another run in the next inning, BCE blew open the lead with a convincing, explosive 6-run frame. Smith began the action with a two-run knock bringing home Holland and Jack Hayes. Then, Valbak barreled a double to left field emptying the bases for two runs and both Suters and Holland picked up RBIs; expanding the lead to a 15-5 game.

  • EMU crossed home plate once more in the eighth but was all it could manage, as the game concluded in a decision after eight innings due to darkness.

Game Notes

  • Andrew Baugher collected his first win of the season, relieving Lucas Cash and turning in a stat line of two innings pitched, three hits, one run, and just one walk.

  • At the plate, Trent Holland put up a dominant outing going 5-for-6 on the day including two scored runs and one RBI.

  • Ashton Smith provided a strong performance also at the plate, tallying three RBIs including his fifth home run of the season.

  • The Eagles doubled the Royals in walks drawing eight.
