How It Happened
Game 1
-
Defensive miscues from the Eagles helped the Maroons convert on unearned runs as BCE gave up four errors in the game. Although, the offensive surges were put in motion, the costly fielding mistakes allowed ROA to continue to have command over the game.
-
Even with both starting pitchers holding their ground in three innings, a solo shot over the left field fence by the Maroons opened the score. Two more runs crossed home plate for ROA on a sac fly and a throwing error to score in the third run. The Eagles also got their offense going, tying the score at three apiece in the bottom of the frame. Ashton Smith lined a single to bring home Chandler Valbak. With the Eagles threatening, Trent Holland crossed home from a wild pitch. Lucas Bauer added Bridgewater's third run with a ripped single to right to score in Smith.
-
Next inning, the Maroons did not go away quickly adding two more runs to the scoreboard with a two-run home run. Soon after, ROA homered in back-to-back at bats marking the score at 6-3. Andrew Baugher then entered the mound to relieve Nick Harris, but was soon met with a trio of runs on a pair of singles dipping into the outfield.
-
At a 9-3 deficit, Chandler Valbak worked to get the Eagles back into striking distance with a deep and far line drive over the left field wall for a three-run homer bringing in Bransen Hensley and Nick Stavros. After the pitching change, the Eagles forced another run with a Zack Chadwell RBI single to cut the score to 9-7 ROA.
-
Later in the eighth inning, ROA pulled ahead as action on the bases led to a scored run on a wild pitch and an ill-advised throwing mistake for another run to cross home plate. The Eagles faced a strong arm from relief and stranded three runners in the next to innings. The Maroons added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a sac fly to seal the first game, 12-7.
Game 2
-
The Eagles led for most of the game getting out to a hot start, but by the seventh inning errors caught up to them giving the Maroons the advantage to get comfortable and drive in unearned runs. A long and disputed controversial call in the ninth inning as the score was tied derailed any momentum. In extras, officials signaled a tie game due to darkness.
-
All the momentum was on Bridgewater's side until reaching the later innings. The offense clicked right out of the gate. In the first inning, Trent Holland doubled left to knock in Nick Stavros. Following that, Zack Chadwell laced a single for Holland to round third and touch home plate.
-
BCE built up another scoring surge as Ashton Smith reached second on a double to left field. Chadwell executed a middle-of-the-zone fastball to send a no-doubter over the right field wall for the 4-0 advantage. Then, as the fourth inning rolled on moving Bryce Suters around the bases to get him to third, Stavros then sacrificed to get the RBI.
