FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Bridgewater baseball faced a setback against Mary Washington falling 11-1 on the road Tuesday.
The Basics
Score: Mary Washington (UMW) 11, Bridgewater (BCE) 1
Records: UMW (12-4), BCE (7-6-1)
How It Happened
-
Despite the dominant scoring frames in late innings, BCE got the scoring started as Chandler Valbak helped Nick Stavros to get sent home after Stavros reached on a single. Trent Holland then lined a single through the infield to advance Stavros. Valbak answered the call with a ripped single down the middle for the lone run for the Eagles.
-
In the bottom of the third, the runs began to stack for UMW, tallying five runs to the scoreboard. As starting Bridgewater pitcher Joe Christopher faced 10 batters in the frame, UMW put together a pair of singles to even it up at one apiece with bases loaded. A hit by pitch and an infield single quickly extended the score to 3-1. Then, a bases-loaded double led to an additional two runs.
-
Two innings later, UMW came back for more opening the bottom of the fifth with a double. A costly error advanced runners to then help ease the next batter for an RBI single. Soon after, a bases-clearing triple quickly bumped the lead to eight with a bold 9-1 advantage.
-
BCE entered the sixth inning looking to dampen the scoring surge by the UMW Eagles building on its own bases-loaded scoring chance. Chadwell singled; then back-to-back walks followed, leaving the opportunity open for Lucas Bauer. Bauer worked a full count fouling off good looks but ultimately was held by the swinging strike three call.
Game Notes
-
Bridgewater starting pitcher Joe Christopher went three innings on one earned run, four total runs, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch. UMW's relievers got the job done in the final third as the relief-pitching tandem went an inning each on three combined strikeouts and no runs.
