Women's Lacrosse Slips by Chatham in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Bridgewater women's lacrosse squeezed by Chatham in its first game of spring break in Florida in a 7-6 win Tuesday afternoon. 

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 7, Chatham (CU) 6  

Records: BCE (3-1), CU (0-1) 

How It Happened 

  • The nine penalties carded to Chatham was the momentum changer throughout the game, giving the Eagles an edge in attacks while only being carded three. BCE found a stable defensive line to keep the Cougars a step behind to build any strong offensive drive. For BCE, the offensive drives began fast and early. 

  • In the first quarter, Grace Pietro sliced through the defense to launch the first goal of the game into the back of the net. Then, on a man-up advantage, the Eagles raised the score to two with the delivered pass by Kena Gresham for the Jenna Entsminger goal. The Cougars managed to keep the opening period close as CU and BCE went goal for goal with an added goal by Entsminger. CU knotted it up at three apiece with two minutes left in the first. 

  • The Eagles did not stray away from the attacking drives quickly opening a scoring chance in the second quarter. Enstminger rang in two more goals with the second one coming seconds before the horn sounded for the first half as the Eagles held onto the lead at 5-3. 

  • The Cougars responded with a short scoring burst tying the game at five halfway through the third quarter. However, once again, the scoring chances BCE kept getting were putting the Cougars out of reach from obtaining a solid lead. BCE went up by one with the help of Olivia Lawrence netting one for the 6-5 score. Minutes later, Kyla Fricks stepped into the aggressive drive without backing down and planted a shot perfectly in goal. 

  • While CU did look to get the game closer in the fourth with a goal at 3:06 mark, the Eagles did enough to hold off any threatening offensive drive for the potential game-tying point. The Eagles came away with the one-point advantage for the 7-6 win. 

Game Notes 

  • Jenna Entsminger had another multi-scoring game tallying four goals with six shots on target. 

  • Although almost all categories favored Chatham in the final statistics, the Eagles took advantage of penalties and executed on two of them.

The Eagles are back in action on Thursday, March 6 at 9 a.m. for the second game of the spring break trip in Clearwater, Fla.
