Men's Lacrosse Downs Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team rolled to a 17-2 victory over Averett on Saturday on the road.

The Basics
Score:
 Bridgewater 17; Averett 2
Records: Bridgewater 4-7 (2-2 ODAC); Averett 4-7 (1-3 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Averett struck first on a lengthy possession nearly three minutes in to take a 1-0 advantage, but the Eagles formulated a response late in the first as Owen Cogan capped off a long Bridgewater possession with his 10th tally of the season to even the contest. The teams traded chances down the stretch until a turnover by AU in its own end in the closing chances led to a BC chance. Luke Wendler buried his shot just before the horn to make it 2-1 heading to the second quarter.
  • The Eagles broke open the game with a massive second quarter. BC struck twice in the opening 98 seconds of the frame as tallies by Tyler Pinto and Wendler blew the game open at a 4-1 advantage. Gabe Wallman made a save in the cage for the Eagles and Bridgewater added another pair of scores in quick time as Wendler completed the hat trick and Finnegan Pullich's score made it 6-1. AU called a timeout, but that did not slow down the BC offense. Five more tallies for the Eagles down the stretch capped off by an Evan Mader tally made it 11-1 heading to the break.
  • Bridgewater opened the third quarter with two quick goals as Isaac Beals and Wendler stretched the lead to 13-1. Averett had a response to cut the lead down to 13-2 shortly after and then both teams traded chances including multiple shots on target by Wendler that were turned away by the Cougars netminder to send the game to the fourth.
  • BC opened the fourth quarter with a win at the dot and the two sides traded chances before Cooper Hann netted his first goal of the season to make it 14-2. Hann got back in on the fun as Hunter Gray found hime open 50 seconds later to extend the lead to 15-2. Hann completed the hat trick with 3:24 to play to extend the advantage even further, while a Conner Jeffries tally with 31 seconds to play rounded out the scoring and polished off the victory.
Match Notes
  • Wendler's four-goal afternoon led the Eagles offensively as Hann tallied a hat trick as well. Wallman made just two saves on the afternoon as the defense limited AU to just four shots during his time in the cage. The Eagles were led defensively by Liam Santilli with two caused turnovers while Killian Krapfl's 14 groundballs, primarily from the face off circle, led BC in that department.
  • Robbie Isenhour was the Cougars' top player statistically as he made 25 saves on the 42 shots he faced on target.
  • BC executed all day long with a 17-for-17 mark in clears and a 62-16 edge in shots.
