Softball Drops Two to No. 3 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 3 Christopher Newport on Thursday.

Game 1
The Basics
Score:
Game 1: No. 3 Christopher Newport 3, Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 12-7, No. 3 Christopher Newport 20-1
How It Happened
  • Bridgewater went down on strikes to open the game and Christopher Newport looked to strike. A leadoff single in the bottom of the first for the Captains got the offense started and a two-run home run in the next at bat made it 2-0 for CNU before Bridgewater recorded an out. Mackenzie Cauthorn recovered quickly in the circle and got out of the inning allowing just the pair of runs thanks to a pair of strikeouts.
  • Kate Alger was dealing in the circle for the Captains as she continued to sit the Eagles down in order, but Cauthorn repaid the favor as the two hurlers dueled through the middle innings, not surrendering a base runner after the first inning either way until the top of the fifth.
  • McKenna Mueller tried to get the Eagles' offense going as eh broke up the base runner drought and shattered Alger's perfect game bid as she connected for a solo shot over the left field wall to slice the deficit in half. Lily Moyers and Leiah Branch each made solid contact later in the inning, but found the gloves of the Captains with a pair of flyouts.
  • Cauthorn continued to deal not allowing a CNU base runner until the bottom of the sixth where another Candace Slaw single broke the streak, but Skyler Buzbee caught her stealing. BC was not out of the woods yet as Brooke Greaved connected again with her second home run of the game, this time of the solo variety to double the advantage to 3-1.
  • Bridgewater looked to rally in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout from Alger and a pair of plays at third sealed the deal.
Match Notes
  • Cauthorn (5-4) took the loss as she surrender three runs on four hits in the pitchers duel. The junior also fanned five. Mueller had BC's only hit with her solo dinger.
  • Alger (10-0) struck out 10 on her way to her 10th win of the year. Greaver had a pair of hits, both home runs, and drove in all three CNU runs.
Game 2
Score: No. 3 Christopher Newport 8, Bridgewater 2
Records: Bridgewater 12-8, No. 3 Christopher Newport 21-1
  • Bridgewater went down in order to open game two and CNU opened the bottom of the first identically to game one as Slaw singled and later scored, but not on a long ball this time as some ground outs and a stolen base made it 1-0 for the Captains.
  • CNU stranded a runner in the bottom of the second as Elan Williams worked through the frame for BC. The Eagles bats came alive in the top of the third as Lexi Schaaf singled to center field with one away and Molly Ecroyd came in to run for the BC catcher. The junior swiped second and scored from second later in the frame as Aniella Baldwin singled back up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Captains opened the bottom of the third with a base knock and followed that with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs. A line out to Baldwin in right allowed for the lead runner to tag from third and give the home side the lead back. The Captains added on with a RBI single and utilized some small bal to stretch the advantage all the way to 5-1 as Evelyn Rhodes came in and got eh Eagles out of the jam.
  • BC looked to strike back in the top of the fourth and Kaelyn Ramsey reached on an error and the Eagles took advantage. Ramsey stole second and Mueller followed her with a walk to put two runners on. Branch laid down a sacrifice bunt in the next at bat to push both runners into scoring position and Jordan Wise delivered as she followed with a single to center field to drive Ramsey in. BC looked to put the squeeze play on with runners on the corners but CNU held Mueller on third with the sacrifice bunt and she was stranded there with wise at second.
  • The Captains had a chance to strike in the home half of the fourth, but left runners stranded and BC did much of the same as a leadoff single from Schaaf in the top of the fifth did not result in a run.
  • The home team added on to the lead with a three-run bottom of the sixth on three hits and a BC error to make it 8-2 heading to the Eagles last chance to strike back. Caroline Malandra delivered with a single in a pinch hit effort with one out, but she was out out on a double play in the next at bat to wrap up game two.
Match Notes
  • Williams (2-1) took the loss in the circle for the Eagles as she surrendered three earned runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings of work. The Eagles offense came alive in game two as they tallied five hits led by a pair from Schaaf.
  • Olivia Kim (2-0) picked up the victory as eh went the distance for the Captains surrendering an earned run and just five hits. Slaw turned in a 4-for-4 effort in game two as Greaver drove in three more runs to fuel the CNU offense.
