Game 1
The Basics
Score:
Game 1: Ferrum 5, Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 12-9, Ferrum 6-13
How It Happened
  • Bridgewater got on the board right away as a Kaelyn Ramsey double put the Eagles in business. Ferrum tagged Ramsey out on her way to third on a fielder's choice during the next at bat, allowing McKenna Mueller to reach and the junior stole second to get into scoring position with two away. Leiah Branch walked and Jordan Wise put a ball in ply next, but a Panthers error allowed her to reach and brought Mueller in to score and make it 1-0 for BC.
  • Ferrum struck back right away as it put two runners on with one out. A single rove in the lead runner to tie the game at 1-1. FC extended the inning and loaded the bases, but a nifty play by Mackenzie Cauthorn in the circle caught the runner heading home on a groundout and a strikeout followed to keep the game tied.
  • Lexi Schaaf doubled to open the second, but was left stranded on third as the inning came to a close. Cauthorn responded by sitting the side down on strikes in the home half of the second. Rmsey followed by leading the top of the third off with a single, but she was nabbed stealing to wash way the leadoff runner.
  • Ferrum struck in the bottom of the fourth as a walk after two Cauthorn strikeouts put a runner on. The Panthers followed with a single to the gap in right field that brought the runner all the way to the pate and into score from first and put FC in front 2-1. Cauthorn looked to give herself run support in the top of the fifth, but she was left stranded after her inning-opening single.
  • BC made a change in the circle as Erica Nelson came into the game, but a walk opened the frame. A groundout and a stolen base moved the insurance run to third and a single in the next at bat made it 3-1 for Ferrum. The Panthers added on to more runs in the inning, including a bases-loaded walk after a crucial error that made it 5-1 for the home team. Bridgewater looked to rally and had runners on in the sixth and the seventh, but left them stranded including one in scoring position.
Match Notes
  • Cauthorn (5-5) took the loss as she surrendered a pair of earned runs and struck out nine in 4.0 innings of work. Four different pitchers saw action for BC in the game one loss. Ramsey led the BC offense as she was the only Eagle with multiple base hits.
  • Wood (4-5) picked up the complete game victory for the Panthers allowing the one unearned run on six hits. Peters led FC offensively with a pair of hits.
Game 2
Score: Bridgewater 4, Ferrum 2
Records: Bridgewater 13-9; Ferrum 6-14
  • Ferrum got on the board first in its first chance at the plate in game two. A leadoff walk an some small ball moved the opening runner to scoring position and a RBI groundout made it 1-0 for the home side after one. Shaaf opened the second inning with a single up the middle and worked her way over to third after a bunt and a flyout, but she was left stranded.
  • Ferrum added on in the bottom of the second as a one-out double put the Panthers in business. BC got the second out, but a single followed in the next at bat to make it 2-0 for the home side.
  • The BC offense looked to get something going in the top of the fourth as Mueller and Schaaf registered back-to-back singles with one out. BC looked to put on the double steal, but Mueller was caught on her way to third as Schaaf reached second to halt the momentum.
  • Bridgewater got on the board in the top of the fifth as Jazmyne Smith went deep with a solo home run to open the frame. Now leading 2-1, Ferrum looked to respond as it loaded the bases with just one out. Evelyn Rhoads dug deep in the circle for the Eagles as she got two Panthers to pop up to the infield in succession to keep it a one-run game.
  • The Eagles struck again in the top of the sixth as Branch delivered with a pinch-hit double with one out. Mueller moved her pinch runner, Aniella Baldwin, to third and Schaaf stayed hot at the dish with a single to left field to drive in Baldwin and tie the game. Wise followed with a single o move Schaaf to third, but both runners were left stranded in the brand-new tie game.
  • Both teams did not get a runner aboard following Schaaf's game-tying single to send the game to extra innings. Caroline Malandra represented BC's runner in the international-tiebreaker and was moved to third instantly as Ramsey laid down a sacrifice bunt. Baldwin followed as she put a ball in play and a great read by Malandra had her beat the throw to the plate to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead on the manufactured run. The Eagles weren't done there as Schaaf followed with a single up the middle to score Baldwin from second and make it 4-2. Ferrum was forced to play its half of the inning straight up with the runner on second, but the runner never moved as Rhoads induced two pop ups to Mueller at short stop and a flyout to left to seal the comeback.
Match Notes
  • Rhoads (4-2) went the distance in game two allowing both earned runs on seven hits. Schaaf had a day to remember at the dish as she went four-for-four and drove in two runs.
  • Greiner (2-6) took the loss for Ferrum as she went the distance and allowed a pair of earned runs.
  • Pleskovic becomes just the second head coach in program history to reach 100 wins at BC and sits as the second winningest coach in the program's 37-year history.
