BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team fell in a pair of extra-inning games to No. 21 Gettysburg on Sunday at home.
Game 1
The Basics
Score: Game 1: No. 21 Gettysburg 2, Bridgewater 1 (8 innings)
Records: Bridgewater 12-5, No. 21 Gettysburg 15-3
How It Happened
- Gettysburg put the game's leadoff runner aboard as a base hit took a wicked hop and put a runner on third with no outs. Mackenzie Cauthorn induced a pop up in the infield to get the first out, but a RBI double followed to put Gettysburg in front 1-0. Cauthron got a strikeout and a flyout to limit the damage in the top of the first.
- Bridgewater went down in order in the bottom of the first and Cauthorn repaid the favor as she sat down Gettysburg in order.
- Gettysburg had chances to extend the lead as base hits put runners on in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but the Eagles got out of the jam each time including a fielder's choice that ended the top of the fifth stranding two.
- BC finally got its first base runner with a leadoff single from McKenna Mueller in the home half of the fifth. Mueller moved all the way around to third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, but an infield pop up ended the inning with her stranded.
- The Bullets had runners on in the sixth and the seventh but left them stranded including one in scoring position in the latter instance. Jadelyn Ramirez led off the home half of the seventh with BC's back to the wall and made contact and reached on a bloop single the opposite way to put the potential game-tying run on the base paths with no outs. Kaelyn Ramsey re-entered to run for Ramirez and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt put her in scoring position. Mueller stepped in net and singled to center field and Ramsey came around to score while an errant throw put Mueller all the way at third with just one out as the winning run. A foul flyout and a strikeout by the Bullets shut down the hopes of the walk-off and sent the game to the eighth.
- GC opened the eighth by bunting to move the ITB runner over to third and a single drove in the runner, unearned, put Gettysburg in front. A double followed and put two runners in scoring position and a flyout by Lauren O' Leary appeared deep enough for a sacrifice to extend the lead, but a on-the-money throw by Sarah Kate Tozier in center field spoiled the opportunity as the runner was out at the plate. BC bunted to move Lily Moyers, the tie-break runner, to third, but a pair of strikeouts left her stranded and gave Gettysburg the game on victory.
Match Notes
- Cauthorn (5-3) took the loss in the circle allowing just one earned run over all eight innings of work. Mueller accounted for two of BC's three hits with Ramirez having the other in her pinch-hit at bat in the seventh.
- Forry (11-2) took the win for Gettysburg after going all eight innings and surrendering just the one earned run while striking out eight. Three different Bullets tallied a pair of hits for Gettysburg.
Game 2
Score: No. 21 Gettysburg 5
, Bridgewater 3
Records: Bridgewater 12-6, No. 21 Gettysburg 16-3
- Evelyn Rhodes put Gettysburg down in order to start the second game of the day and the Eagles went to work. Ramsey doubled to the left field wall with one away in the top of the first and moved to third after a wild pitch. Jordan Wise followed with a single back up the middle to allow Ramsey to score easily and give the Eagles an early lead.
- Gettysburg got its first hit of game two with a two-out double, but left the runner stranded. BC went down in order in response and Guilford worked another runner into scoring position in the top of the third but she was left stranded after a groundout to Wise at second base.
- Bridgewater had a chance to tack on to the lead in the bottom of the third as a walk by Abby Bryum and a base hit from Aniella Baldwin put two runners on. Ramsey laid down a bunt to move both runners forward and Wise hit a sharp liner that was snagged by the short stop and a flyout from Mueller followed to strand the pair.
- The Bullets struck back in the top of the fourth as a leadoff double put the away team in business. A flyout moved the leadoff runner into scoring position and a base hit followed to tie the game 1-1. Bridgewater responded instantly as Leiah Branch singled, and her pinch runner Molly Ecroyd swiped second. Lexi Schaaf dug in next and doubled to the wall in left allowing Ecroyd to score despite a near mishap to put BC in front 2-1.
- Gettysburg put a pair of runners on in the top of the fifth but left them both stranded on the base paths. BC went down in order and Gettysburg cashed in with a solo home run to left center to tie the game at 2-2. The Bullets hit a double later in the inning, but a nice play by Andrea Savage at third left the runner stranded.
- Bridgewater and Gettysburg each stranded runners in the bottom of the sixth and the top of the seventh respectively to keep the game tied. Ramirez got the call to pinch hit in the top of the seventh and reached on an infield single. The rookie then stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt with just one out. Ramirez would be left at third as Forry, who entered in relief in the top of the frame, made a pair of plays on comebackers and flipped them to first to strand the potential-winning run.
- GC struck first in the top of the eighth by the tune of three runs thanks to the ITB runner scoring with one away. Mueller drove in Ramsey, BC's tie-breaker runner, but that was all the Eagles got going offensively as Gettysburg sealed the series sweep.
Match Notes
- Rhoads (3-2) took the loss for the Eagles tossing 7.2 innings in the circle and allowing four earned runs. Erica Nelson came in and recorded the final out in the eighth for BC. Branch was the only Eagle with multiple base hits on a 2-for-3 afternoon. Ramsey scored a pair of runs, while Wise, Mueller and Schaaf all tallied a RBI.
- Forry (12-2) tallied her second win of the day in relief. Gettysburg had four different pitchers in the circle in game two and surrendered just one walk. Anika Pelekis had a day at the dish in game two with three hits and a RBI.
