Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Falls to Roanoke

SALEM, Va. - Bridgewater women's lacrosse fell to Roanoke 16-4 on the road in ODAC play Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Roanoke (ROA) 16, Bridgewater (BCE) 4

Records: ROA (5-4 OVR, 2-1 ODAC), BCE (6-3 OVR, 2-1 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • The Maroons got off to a hot start to carry strong momentum into the second half on 11 unanswered goals. The Eagles were struggling to keep control of their possessions and ROA kept striking into offensive territory. BCE put some pressure on the Maroons in the second half, but the defense held firmly onto a steady lead to keep the Eagles from cutting the aggressive edge.

  • In the first quarter, ROA went on a huge scoring surge, laying in eight goals in the first 15 minutes of play. The second quarter came, and the Eagles had little to stop the commanding offense from the Maroons. A handful of costly turnovers gave ROA the advantage in setting up a goal-situation play. At 9:28, Jenna Entsminger had a chance at goal on a free position attempt but was saved by the goalie. Two more goals were scored by the Maroons giving them a healthy 11-0 lead heading into the second half.

  • The Eagles came alive and found themselves scoring opportunities in the third quarter as Paige Mayers found the back of the net on a free position shot and a solo drive to the crease for the laser to knock the deficit to 11-2.  The Maroons held strong and weathered the scoring surge as the 12th goal cashed in. Then, a strong clear and an open look at goal gave Mayers the connection with Entsminger to sink the third goal of the day. However, once again, the Maroons answered back to keep a ten-goal lead into the final quarter.

  • Three more goals in a span of four minutes came by the Maroons and the Eagles found themselves in a deep hole to climb out of. BCE managed to find open looks at goal with strong takes to the offensive third resulting in the fourth goal on the day as Entsminger wound back and fired the shot past the goalie. The Maroons held off the Eagles from making any ground and closed out the day at 16-4.

Game Notes

  • Jenna Entsminger and Paige Mayers contributed all the offense for the Eagles combining for four goals, five points, 13 shots, and an assist.

  • The 25 turnovers given to Bridgewater and 10 turnovers caused by the Maroons were too much to bear as Roanoke took care of possession at a better clip, only turning over 19 with seven caused turnovers.

  • The seven penalties carded to the Eagles put them at a disadvantage in making up any ground as Roanoke was not carded all game.
