Eagles Explode in Dominant Win Over Ferrum at Home

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater women's lacrosse stormed past Ferrum at home in a commanding 21-1 win Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles secured a 21-1 win in their first conference matchup of the season.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 21, Ferrum (FC) 1

Records: BCE (5-2 OVR, 1-0 ODAC), FC (2-3 OVR, 0-2 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • An offensive surge relentless to let up in the opposition's third continued to power through Ferrum's back line while Bridgewater controlled possessions dominantly, getting down field quick and finding the back of the net. In the first seven minutes of play, the Eagles emerged to an astounding 7-0 lead with goals coming from four different players in Jenna Entsminger, Paige Overeem, Paige Mayers, and Grace Pietro. At 11:05 on the clock in the first quarter, Entsminger tallied a hat trick.

  • Then, later in the first, the aggressive attack forced a yellow card penalty resulting in Overeem's second goal of the game and eighth goal for the Eagles off the man-up advantage. The Eagles ended the opening quarter with an 8-0 lead.

  • In the first two minutes of the second quarter, finding open ground and a strong attack, Olivia Lawrence knocked in the ninth goal. Soon after, a strong draw control put the Eagles back on attack quickly handing the offensive drive to Kena Gresham. Gresham scanned the field to then find the gliding Mayers for the shot in the back of the net. A costly turnover by the Panthers put the Eagles in comfortable territory as Mayers again found open net for the 11-0 advantage. A free position attempt for BCE gave Overeem an open chance at net drilling the 12th point and wrapping the first half in a shutout, 12-0.

  • The second half shaped up to be the same as the first with offensive attack through the gaps of the defense. BCE got the 13th goal to go off the stick of Kena Gresham while dealing with a man-down at play. A yellow card was then dealt to FC giving BCE another open look at net in a free position attempt, while Taylor Price sank the shot. With under five minutes to go in the third quarter, FC avoided the shut out in a free position shot to put it at 14-1. However, the Eagles came roaring back tacking on three more goals in a dangerous spot in the crease with goals scored by Carly Gardill and Overeem (twice).

  • At a commanding 17-1 lead, the Eagles continued to allow for extra breathing room firing the 18th goal off the stick of Pietro. Lawrence again added to the action, while the Paige duo squared up to rip a shot both into the back of the net for the final score, 21-1.

Game Notes

  • Paige Mayers chased the history books against Ferrum tying the program record in both points and draw controls while Mayers collected an impressive stat line of five goals, five assists, 10 points, 16 draw controls, and six ground balls.

  • Another standout performance came from Paige Overeem, as the first year led Bridgewater in goals scored with six on the day.

  • The Panthers lost control of possession against a tough defensive squad in BCE with 27 turnovers while limited to five shots in game action.
