Baseball Wins in Walk-Off Thriller Over McDaniel

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater baseball won in a thrilling walk-off home run by Chandler Valbak; 6-5 over McDaniel in the home opener Saturday.

The Eagles secured the home opener 6-5 at Bridgewater Baseball Field.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 6, McDaniel (MD) 5

Records: BCE (1-1), MD (0-1)

How It Happened

  • The Green Terror got to a fast start earning two runs in the top of the first inning off an RBI sacrifice fly and immediately after scoring on a wild pitch to go up 2-0. The Eagles would not respond in the bottom of the inning despite two runners on base.

  • Starting pitcher Nick Harris came back strong in the second, retiring three batters. BCE still would not do any damage at the plate as McDaniel's pitcher Nercessia remained in control.

  • In the sixth inning, MD tacked on another run from a solo shot over the right field fence. However, BCE got the offense locked in drumming up bases loaded. Ashton Smith got the Eagles on the board, walking in Trent Holland. That was all the Eagles could muster in the sixth inning, trailing by two, 3-1.

  • Green Terror worked to add some insurance, scoring in two more runners from a sac fly and a solo homer in the seventh. The Eagles did not go away, stepping on the gas pedal in the seventh inning. Holland scored in Isaac Sumpter from a sac fly and soon after Valbak answered the call barreling a double down the infield line; knocking in Spencer Sigmon- to cut the deficit to 5-3. Bryce Suters got a piece of one hitting a huge single to left and scoring in Valbak and Stavros for the tie at 5-5.

  •  In the bottom of the ninth inning, The Eagles found the opening, as Valbak launched one to deep left field, landing over the fence for the walk-off homer.

Game Notes

  • Valbak registered four hits and two RBIs, leading the way offensively for the Eagles. That was Valbak's first career home run for the walk-off.

  • Starting pitcher Nick Harris punched out seven batters on two runs and one hit in four innings.

  • Nick Stavros stayed steady at the plate with three walks and tallying a scored run.
