Women's Soccer Scores Double-Digits Against EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team took down EMU 10-0 Wednesday night.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater 10, EMU 0

Records: Bridgewater (10-4, 4-3 ODAC), EMU (4-8-1, 2-4 ODAC)

How it Happened

  • Bridgewater took the action to EMU's defensive half in the opening minutes. Despite being scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the contest, Lyric Birkley, Cassandra Villafan, and Laura Narby each had shot attempts in the opening minutes. Birkley's shot at the 4:43 mark was the first on target for the Eagles, but it was saved by the EMU keeper.

  • In the 13th minute, Villafan was fouled inside the box, leading to a penalty kick. Narby took the penalty opportunity for the Eagles and was able to put a point on the board.

  • Shortly after, the Eagles scored on a set piece. Villafan inserted a corner and found Katherine King in the box. King redirected the ball past the goalie for the second goal of the match.

  • Anna Belan, Birkley, Narby, and Villafan continued to apply pressure to the EMU defense. Each put at least one shot on goal a piece in the following minutes.

  • In the 22nd minute, a corner kick was launched into a crowd of black and white jerseys. After ricocheting off several players, the ball landed at the foot of Narby. Narby found nylon for the second time in the match.

  • After some time in the Eagles defensive half, BC brought the action back to the EMU defensive half. Birkley drove down the left side of the field and sent a cross to Sophia Phillips. Phillips found the back of the net with one touch.

  • In the 28th minute, Villafan was fouled in the box once again, leading to another penalty kick for Bridgewater. Lyric Birkley was able to convert on the opportunity for the Eagles.

  • In the 30th minute, Brianna Curro sent a corner kick into the box. Birkley managed to score off the set piece for her second goal of the match.

  • Bridgewater's defense faced a scare in the waning minutes of the first half. EMU had their lone shot on goal in a sequence that occurred in the 42nd minute. A shot was seemingly going to make its way past BC keeper Micah Stine, but it was blocked by the top woodwork. The shot opportunity that followed was off the mark, but it resulted in a corner kick. EMU sent another shot towards the goal, but it was stopped by Stine.

  • The Eagles swapped goalies in the second half, sitting Stine for sophomore keeper Rylee Asiello.

  • The Eagles continued their scoring ways in the 52nd minute off a free kick opportunity taken by Villafan. Villafan found Birkley for the first goal of the half.

  • Lucy Larson scored in the 59th minute after Villafan sent a pass to Narby on the left side of the field. Narby began to close in on the goal, but made the extra pass to Larson.

  • Hannah England scored the ninth goal of the contest with a little under five minutes to play. Brianna Curro sent a corner kick into the box. The pass bounced off the head of Elle Turner and was tapped in by England.

  • With two minutes to go in the contest, Madison Hood and Kylie Denton applied pressure on the EMU defense, as each put a shot on target. Although both attempts were saved by the Royals keeper, Denton found nylon for the first time of her career on the third shot of the sequence.

Match Notes

  • Lyric Birkley notched her 100th career point with her goal at the 28-minute mark. She is the third player in program history to achieve this feat. Currently at 105 points for a career, Birkley sits eight points away from the top mark in program history.

  • After her assist, Birkley's career assist total moved to 25. She now sits two assists away from the top mark in program history.

  • Hannah England scored her first goal of the season in the second half.

  • Kylie Denton recorded the first goal of her collegiate career in the 88th minute.

  • Bridgewater extended their win streak against EMU to 17 matches, dating back to 2009. BC scored the most goals against EMU since scoring 10 in 2012. These were the most goals allowed in a single match by the Royals since 2015.
