Women's Soccer Cruise to Homecoming Weekend Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team capped off the homecoming weekend slate of events with a 5-0 victory over Guilford.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater 5, Guilford 0

Records: Bridgewater (9-4, 3-3 ODAC), Guilford (7-4-2, 1-4 ODAC)

How it Happened

  • The Eagles were on the offensive in the early stages of the match. In the third minute, the Eagles had a set piece opportunity off a Lyric Birkley thow-in. Birkley sent the ball near the goal, and it was redirected by the head of a Guilford player. Katherine King sent a quick pass to Kendall Garza in the box, who redirected the pass into the back of the net with her right foot.

  • With the early advantage, the Eagles continued to apply pressure to the Guilford defense. Villafan ripped a shot, but it was out right. Birkley had a couple of attempts of her own. One was met by the Guilford keeper, and the other went left.

  • After the barrage of shots from BC, the Quakers surrendered a goal off a Bridgewater set piece.Birkley found Anna Belan on a throw in. Belan took a shot from range and found nylon despite GC keeper Lorelai Lis getting her fingertips on the shot.

  • Neither team produced a goal for the remainder of the half, but BC continued to rip away shot attempts. Guilford's first shot attempt of the match came in the 19th minute, but it was off the mark. Lucy Larson, Aliana Ferreira, and Hannah England came off the bench and let off shots almost immediately after being subbed in.

  • With nearly a minute left in the half, Guilford sent a shot to the bottom left of the goal, but it was stopped by Erinn Lockard

  • The second half sang the same song as the first, as the Eagles immediately put pressure on the Guilford defense. Laura Narby and Sophia Phillips fired at the goal several times apiece in the first 15 minutes of the half.

  • Garza got her second goal of the match off a set piece opportunity. Like her first goal, Birkley found Garza on a long throw in opportunity. Garza took the pass out the air and bumped it past the GC goalie.

  • In the 70th minute, the ball was bounced around in the box before finding its way to a wide open Sarah Farally. Farally sent a laser past the Guilford keeper for the first goal of her collegiate career.

  • In the 79th minute, Ferreira lasered a shot towards the goal, but it was saved. The keeper could not get control of the ball, leading to Lucy Larson tapping the ball into the goal for the fifth goal of the match.
