Women's Soccer Dominates SVU

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's soccer team picked up a dominate 3-0 win over Southern Virginia to open the home schedule on Wednesday evening.

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater opened with the front foot and never looked back. Laura Narby, Lyric Birkley and Cassandra Villafan all fired shots that went off target in the game's opening five minutes to contribute the the offensive presence early. Katherine king fired the first shot on goal for BC in the 10th minute, but it was turned aside by Katrina Gardner.
  • BC tallied 11 shots in the game's opening 18 minutes and finally got one past Gardner in the 19th minute as Narby fired a shot towards the cage a sharp angle and Birkley redirected the attempt off the back of her head, over Gardner and in to make it 1-0 for the Eagles.
  • The Eagles rifled three more shots towards the cage in the eight minutes following the Birkley tally before earning a corner kick. Brianna Curro subbed into the came prior to the corner and proceed to make an instant impact as her kick beautiful arced and found an open King on the back post for the volley and in t make it 2-0 BC 27 minutes in.
  • The Crimson and Gold fired seven more shots before the end of the half, but the game remained at a 2-0 scoreline. BC wasted no time adding to the tally in the start of the second half as both Anna Belan and Birkley fired shots on target before Narby took a filed clear by the Knights and turned it into a run of her own. The speedy sophomore got in past all but one defender and fired the shot home to make it 3-0 and for her second point on the afternoon with 30 minutes to play.
  • The Knights finally registered their first shot in the 60th minute, but it missed well wide of the crease. BC had several chances to extend the lead after the third goal of the afternoon, but did not convert.
Match Notes
  • King found the back of the net for the second time on the season, while Birkley and Narby registered their first tallies of the season.
  • Birkley registered her 60th career point to move to sole possession of ninth on the program's all-time scoring list, passing her teammate Skyler Daum.
  • Bridgewater dominated every statistical category across the box score. The Eagles held a healthy 31-1 advantage in shots including a 15-0 tally in shots on target.
  • Despite the scoreline, the SVU goalkeeping was a highlight. Gardner tallied 11 stops on 14 shots faced and Chloe Miller made a save on the single shot she faced in the game's final 29 minutes.
  • BC held an opponent without a shot on goal for the third time in the last two seasons and the first time this year. Bridgewater held EMU and Ferrum without shots on target in back-to-back games last season.
