Women's Soccer Falls Late to VWU

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team fel to Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 on Saturday by the way of a late Marlins' tally.

How It Happened
  • The Eagles worked down the field ad had a pair of chances early on corner kicks, but did not register a shot. The Marlins flipped the field and settled in with a trio of corner kicks. The third try saw VWU put its first shot on goal that was turned away by Ryle Asiello and a second chance off the rebound was also grabbed by the rookie goalkeeper. . 
  • BC got registered its first sht in the 23rd minute as Skyler Daum had her chance scoot wide of the cage off of a free kick. Bridgewater kept the offensive pressure on as Anna Belan rifled a shot from the top of the box off of a failed VWU clear attempt that was barely turned aside by the diving effort from Allie Greco. On the following corner kick, Zoe Webster fired a shot and it missed wide of the cage. Lyric Brikley made a run a few seconds later but Greco fell on her chance to keep the game scoreless at the 30-minute mark. VWU hd a pair of chances down the stretch in the half but a duo of saves by Asiello kept the game scoreless at the break.
  • Bridgewater worked its way into a pair of corner kicks in th opening minutes of the first half, but it was VWU with the scoring chances first on the other end. A free kick in a dangerous spot gave VWU an opportunity, but the Marlins missed a pair of chances off target. BC flipped the field and earned a corner kick in the 55th minute. Birkley and Laura Narby both fired shots on the attempt, but missed the crease. 
  • Just over the hour mark Katherine King fired a shot on goal that was saved by the diving effort from Greco. VWU flipped the field nd fire a shot on goal that was turned aside by Asiello. The teams traded scoring chances until VWU started to settle in the attacking third around the 80-minute mark.The Marlins finally broke the scoreless knot as Shyenne Diaz's ball in found the boot of Alaina Alston to make it 1-0 VWU. BC did not fade. The Eagles worked down inside the attacking third and had multiple chances spoiled late with Narby firing a shot off target with 30 seconds to go. 
Match Notes
  • The Bridgewater offense was anchored by Birkley and Narby who each fired a trio of shots each in the physical contest. Daum also tallied a pair.
  • Virginia Wesleyan finally broke through with Alston's tally in the 81st minute. Kalyn Byrd led the Marlins with five shots. 
  • Asiello played all 90 minutes in goal for BC and registered eight aes. Greco stopped the three shots she saw for VWU.
  • The Marlins out shot the Eagles 24-11 including a 9-3 margin in shots on goal.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, as they head south to Guilford in a rematch of last year's ODAC Quarterfinal game that saw BC advance on penalty kicks.
