Volleyball Makes it Eight Wins in a Row

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team ran its win streak to eight games after a sweep of Hollins and Southern Virginia on Saturday.

Match One:
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Hollins 0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-10)
Records: Bridgewater 8-2 (1-0 ODAC); Hollins 2-9 (0-2 ODAC)
How it Happened:
  • The Eagles opened the match by taking the first seven points highlighted by three kills from Brooklyn Williams and a pair from Reagan Stoop. Hollins got on the board eventually and rattled off four points in a row before a block by Stoop and Rachael Meyers sparked another BC tear that made it 14-4 in favor of the home side. Hollins' momentum was short lived as back-to-back kills from Stoop and three aces from Faith Shields pushed it to 19-5. HU and BC traded points down the stretch in the opening frame before Hollins fended off three set points that ultimately ended with a Faith DePew kill to end the frame at 25-11.
  • Hollins was able to jump in front in the second set to a 3-1 advantage before the Eagles slowly closed back in. Bridgewater finally gained control of the set as they took a 10-9 lead after a HU attack error that set off a run for BC to make it 14-9 thanks to an ace from Jillian Levin to cap it off. Hollins' got back to within a pair at 14-12, but the Eagles slowly pulled away down the stretch to take the set 25-17.
  • The Eagles hopped in front 5-1 to open the third set and never looked back as the gap stretched to 15-4 after another ace from Levin. Hollins strung some points together, but another BC run with kills from Stoop and Claire Griffith pushed the advantage to 21-8. Another Stoop kill was able to stretch the gap even further at 24-9 and a Levin kill polished it off with a kill at 25-10.
Match Stats:
  • Stoop tallied a season-high 19 kills in the first win of the day to go along with an impressive .615 hitting percentage. Virginia Collins had the second most for BC with five.
  • Alexis Currie tallied 10 digs for BC in the victory to anchor the defense. Stoop, Criffith, Levin and Meyers all tallied blocks.
  • Alyssa Reed led Hollins with six kills and eight digs.
  • BC dominated the stat sheet including an 11-2 edge in service aces led by Faith Shields with four.

Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Southern Virginia 0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22)
Records: Bridgewater 9-2, Southern Virginia 3-8
How it Happened:
  • No team gained a real advantage in the early going as the teams were knotted at 8-8 and 11-11 before a BC run sparked by a Williams kill with multiple strikes from Stoop and a block from Griffith and Gabby Atwell made it 18-12. SVU tried to close in but a Knights service error eventually gave the Eagles the opening set at 25-17.
  • The second opened much of the same way before a short BC run put the Eagles in front 9-4 after an Atwell kill. SVU stopped the bleeding, but he Eagles continued to slowly pull ahead and extended the advantage to 18-10 before SVU turned the tide. The Knights went on an eight-point run of their own to close the deficit down to just a point a 18-17 before an Atwell kill gave the ball back to BC. The Knights kept the gap at just a point before a kill from DepEw made it 21-19 and the Eagles marched on with five points in succession capped off by a kill from Williams to take the set 25-19.
  • Southern Virginia jumped in front 4-1 early before the Eagles slowly closed back in. A kill from DePew helped the Eagles cut into a four-point gap and sparked a run that saw the Eagles step in front at 12-10 on the back of three Levin aces and kills from DePew and Meyers. SVU closed back to within a point n multiple occasions, but the Eagles led the rest of the way out to a 23-18 advantage. Southern Virginia did not go down quietly as the Knights rattled off four-straight points to get it down to 23-22 in favor of BC. An error by SVU and a kill from Meyers capped off the clean sheet at a 25-22 scoreline.
Match Stats:
  • The second win of the day was a team effort with DePew and Stoop tying for the team-high of nine kills with Meyers and Atwell tossing in six each at the middle-hitter position.
  • Stoop led BC with 11 digs while Ashley Rutherford added eight to go along with 15 assists. Faith Shields pitched in 18 assists in the victory as well.
  • Sydney Bassett and Brookelyn Madland led the Knights with 15 and 12 kills respectively. Grace Fulton added 13 digs for SVU
  • The Eagles extended their win streak to eight matches and 24 straight sets win.
