Volleyball Takes Down Lynchburg

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team picked up its ninth win in a row with a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg on Wednesday.

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater stepped in front to a 4-2 lead early in the set after a pair of Lynchburg errors and pushed the lead out to 8-5 after a kill from Claire Griffith. Lynchburg turned the tide immediately and ripped off six points in a row to go ahead 11-8 before a Gabby Atwell kill stalled the Hornet momentum. Lynchburg was able to stretch the lead to as much as 19-15 late before kills from Griffith and Faith DePew helped BC close in. The Eagles continued to creep back in and tied the set at 22-22 after a Reagan Stoop kill before the Hornets went back in front at 23-22. Stoop fired another kill to even things back up and tallied another to give BC a set point. An error by the Hornets gave the Eagles the frame 25-22.
  • Lynchburg could do no wrong in the second set and quickly jumped out to a 12-2 lead. The Hornets continued to expand upon the advantage and ran away to a 24-7 lead before the Eagles finally got a point on serve thanks to a Brooklyn Williams kill. The Hornets ended up evening the match score on the next point, taking the set 25-9.
  • The Hornets continued to ride the momentum swing by jumping in front 3-0 to start the third set, but a kill from Griffith got BC on the board. BC was able to draw eve at 4-4 and took the lead at 6-5 after a DePew kill. Bridgewater ran out to a 10-7 edge after a block from Atwell and Stoop, but a four-point swing from the Hornets gave them the lead back at 11-10. Lynchburg led by as much as 16-13 before a kill from Rachael Meyers sparked a momentum swing and the Eagles got in front 18-16. The Hornets went on another run and took the lead back at 20-19, but it was BC's turn to take the momentum swing as a kill from Stoop set off a six-point turnaround that gave the Eagles a 25-20 victory in the frame and a two set to one lead.
  • The visitors stepped in front again with a 7-4 advantage to start the fourth before a four-point BC swing led by back-to-back aces from DePew put the Eagles in front at 8-7. Lynchburg took the lead back and stretched it to as much as 16-12 before an error and a kill from Stoop got Bridgewater back in business. The hornets led at 19-16, but then it was all Eagles for the rest of the match as a kill from Williams combined with back-to-back kills from Stoop evened things at 19-19. Bridgewater continued the run and took it to the pay window as a Hornets' service error gave BC the set and the match at 25-21.

  • Stoop led BC with 16 kills and 14 digs. Griffith pitched in nine kills, while Faith Shields highlighted with 11 digs and 16 assists.
  • Tori Williamson led Lynchburg with 16 kills and 18 digs.
  • Lynchburg held an edge in the hitting percentage category at a .248 clip compared to .204 for BC, but the 7-4 advantage in blocks for the Eagles contributed to the victory.
