Women's Soccer Ties Maryville to Start 2024

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Bridgewater College women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-2 draw with Maryville on Friday.

How It Happened
  • No side gained a clear advantage early as BC registered shots earl from Cassandra Villafan and Lyric Birkley, but neither found the cage. Maryville found its first opportunity off of a free kick as Mary Bruno put a shot on net that was scooped up by Micah Stine in her first collegiate start in goal.
  • The Scots got on the board first on the back end of a long throw as Anabelle Procter found Hannah Smoot for the opening tally in the 15th minute. The final 30 minutes of the half featured a defensive struggle as Laura Narby registered the only shot since the Maryville goal as she missed wide to send it to the half at a 1-0 advantage for the hosts.
  • Bridgewater found the back of the net early in the second half as Villafan tallied the first goal of her collegiate career as she went to the top left side off of a feed from Birkley to tie the game in the 47th minute at 1-1.
  • Birkley fed the offensive again in the 58th minute after a series of throw ins gave the Eagles a chance. Birkley found Katherine King and the sophomore buried the right-footed shot to give BC a 2-1 lead heading into the final 30 minutes.
  • Maryville answered in the 72nd minuet on a corner kick. Smoot was able to find Madison McDonald to tie the game at 2-2 with inside of 18 minutes to play. Kendall Garza tried to lead the charge off the restart as she got a shot off 14 seconds after the goal but missed wide. The 77th minute saw BC take a corner kick and Narby had her shot turned away by Sydney Mahr. Maryville had a chance to score late but Stine made the tough stop to keep the game tied. Narby had the final offensive look, but her shot missed the target in the 85th minute.

  • Villafan and King found the back of the net for the Eagles as Birkley tallied a pair of assists to add to her multi-point game tally in her career.
  • Narby led BC with four shots and was the only player on either side with multiple shots on target.
  • Three different players registered multiple shots for Maryville.
  • Mahr made four stops on the six shots she faced for the home side. Stine made a pair of saves on just four shots sent her way.
  • BC held a 12-8 edge in shots.
