Eagles Stifle Virginia Wesleyan

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team easily defeated Virginia Wesleyan, 22-6, on the road in ODAC play on Tuesday evening.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles scored early and often as the contest started with Lauren Roberts scoring less than three minutes in with an assist from Aunnie Hacker. Hacker then scored one of her own just 16 seconds later to double the lead at 2-0. Roberts got her second of the game just a minute later and Paige Mayers made it a 4-0 lead 15 seconds after that. The scoring slowed down as the Marlins finally got on the board with back-to-back scores to close out the last two minutes of the quarter and the Eagles led 4-2 after 15 minutes. 
  • VWU closed in with a goal to start the second quarter and cut the lead down to just one, but Roberts completed a first-half hat trick at the 12:10 mark to keep the Eagles in front by two at 5-3. Mayers netted her second goal a minute later and Kaity Petersheim made it 7-3 with 7:35 left in the half. Roberts registered consecutive goals over the next three minutes to push BC up 9-3 as the Marlins got one back before the end of the half. Bridgewater went into halftime with a 9-4 lead.
  • Petersheim scored her second just 13 seconds after play resumed for the third quarter and scored again less than 60 seconds later. Brooke Hanson got in on the scoring with 13:33 on the clock and then assisted Annika Benson on a goal of her own not even 30 seconds after that. The Eagles continued their scoring run as Grace Pietro scored to make it a 14-4 game and Roberts picked up her sixth of the contest with 10:24 left in the quarter. Jenna Entsminger added an up goal with 8:13 left as Bridgewater led 16-4. Virginia Wesleyan ended its scoring drought at the 6:35 mark, but Benson and Petersheim connected a few minutes later to keep the Bridgewater lead at 12 goals. Mayers added another score with one minute left and the Marlins matched it with a goal in the final second of the period, but Bridgewater went into the final quarter with an 18-6 lead. 
  • The fourth quarter was all Bridgewater as it held VWU without a goal and scored four of its own. Miranda Coleman, Mayers, Benson and Addison Garrett all scored as the Eagles left Virginia Beach with a 22-6 win. 
GAME STATS
  • Roberts paced the game with six goals and two assists for an eight-point performance. She also grabbed three ground balls, eight draw controls and caused three turnovers.
  • Mayers finished with four goals, while Petersheim and Benson both had three goals in the win, as well. 
  • Hacker, Pietro, Garrett, Hanson, Entsminger and Coleman all had one goal apiece in the victory. 
  • Hacker also pitched in a pair of assists to go along with her goal, while Petersheim, Garrett, Hanson, Delaney Kerns and Abigayle Zaudtke each had one assist each.
  • Pietro followed Roberts' eight draw controls with five of her own, while Petersheim snagged four and Mayers had one.
  • Maisen Jenkins led the Eagles with five ground balls, while Aubrey Beale had two GBs to go with a pair of caused turnovers. Petersheim, Hacker, Hanson, Benson, Entsminger, Ashley Venit and Julia Frick each picked up one ground ball. 
  • In addition, Jenkins, Petersheim, Hacker, Entsminger and Venit each caused one turnover.
  • Rachael Robinson played the first half and made five saves before Jenkins finished out the contest in the cage with three saves of her own. 
  • Bridgewater had a 34-20 edge in shots in the game and a 17-13 edge in ground balls. The Eagles capitalized on four of their seven free-position attempts and had an 18-12 advantage in draw controls.
