BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's tennis team fell to Virginia Wesleyan 5-1 as rain shortened the conclusion of the match.
Bridgewater was kept off the scoreboard in doubles play. VWU jumped out front to two quick wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but
Noah Hughes and
Matthew Leonard kept the action going at the No. 2 spot. The duo fell behind 0-5 before rattling off three games in a row and keeping the gap at two games until the finish as they came up short 5-8.
The Marlins earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to lock up the match and looked to be cruising at the No. 3 spot before
Corey Beshoar flipped the script. Beshoar dropped the opening set 1-6 and fell behind 1-0 in the second set before rallying and claiming the frame 6-3. The rookie jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the match-tiebreak and earned four match points and converted on the third to secure the win 10-7.
Gabe Elder was in a battle at the No. 4 spot as he stormed back from being behind 1-4 in the opening set to take the opening set 7-5 and dropped the second set 2-6 before the rain halted play. Hughes was in front at the No. 5 spot 6-4 and
Bryce Cline was trailing 2-6 at the stoppage.
The Eagles have a quick turnaround as they take on Guilford tomorrow at 2 p.m.
