HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
- EMU singled in the top half of the first, but left the runner stranded. Jordan Wise led off the home half of the frame with a single the opposite way, getting the BC offense rolling from the jump a failed bunt attempt and a pop up quickly put the Royals an out away from getting out of the jam, but Delaney Lail had other plans as the rookie laid into a pitch and it got out of the park in a hurry to make it 2-0 in favor of BC after one.
- Each team put runners on base in the second but did nothing with them. Mackenzie Cauthorn worked a clean frame in the top of the third and Bridgewater kept the offense flowing. After a strikeout opened the frame, Jazmyne Smith did as she does with a solo blast the opposite way to make it 3-0. The Royals pitched around Lail as she stepped up next. Lail worked a walk and Kaelyn Ramsey followed with a triple to the wall in left center to make it 4-0. The offense wasn't done yet as Lexi Schaaf singled up the middle to drive in Ramsey and make it 5-0.
- Cauthorn continued to deal in the circle, nit allowing an EMU baserunner to advance past first in the fourth and fifth innings. BC padded onto the lead in the bottom of the fifth as back-to-back singles by Ramsey and Lail put two runners on with no outs. Schaaf delivered again with a base clearing double the opposite way to stretch the lead to 7-0. EMU escaped without allowing any more damage as Makayla Cyzick got a pair of strikeouts on the way to retiring the side.
- The Royals felt the scoreboard pressure and knew they needed runs to stay alive. A trio of EMU singles with one out gave its offense a little bit of life as the bases became loaded. Cyzick popped up for the second out of the frame, but consecutive bases loaded walks brought in a pair of runs for EMU making it 7-2. Savannah Painter entered the game for BC and induced a groundout to get out of the frame.
- Bridgewater got a runner around to third but could not capitalize sending it to the seventh with a five-run edge. The Royals opened the seventh with a single and a fielder's choice to keep a runner aboard with one down. Bridgewater made the move to Erica Nelson to close out the seventh and she delivered with a lineout and sat the final out down looking.
GAME STATS:
- Schaaf highlighted game one with a 3-for-3 effort at the dish to go along with three RBI. Wise, Ramsey and Lail each tallied a pair of hits and drove in one and two runs respectively.
- Cyzick (3-8) went the advertised distance for EMU on the way to the loss in the circle. Her statline was all over the map, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits, but recorded eight strikeouts.
- McKenzie Cauthorn (5-5) got back in the win column for BC after allowing a pair of earned runs to go along with three strikeouts.
GAME TWO
- The Royals opened game two with a walk, but from that point forward Lail settled in inside the circle as she sat down the next three EMU batters. Wise opened game two with a single and a ail walk later in the inning put two runners aboard, but a pop up ended the side.
- Lail retired EMU in order including a pair of strikeouts and the Eagle offense seized the moment. Schaaf hit a flyball with some zip on it and it went in and out of the glove of the Royal's left fielder allowing her to reach base. Pair of strikeouts from Natalye Graham looked to flip the script before McKenna Mueller extended the inning with a full-count walk to flip the order back to Wise. The sophomore connected again, this time with a single the opposite way to drive in Schaaf and make it 1-0 for BC after two.
- The Rookie in the circle for BC continued to deal with another hitless frame, but Graham did much of the same in the home half of the third. EMU broke up the no-hit bid an out into the fourth with a pair of base rips, but left the runners stranded. Bridgewater went down in order in the bottom of the fourth and quickly BC found themselves with two away in the top of the fifth. Graham got tagged by a pitch at the plate to extend the inning and then the skies opened out of nowhere. The rain and hail proved to be too much for the already wet field and game two was suspended with a resumption date to be determined.
