Eagles Take Down Goucher in Home Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team opened up its home slate with a 12-4 win over Goucher on a rainy and dreary Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 12, Goucher 4
Records: Bridgewater 3-2; Goucher 1-4

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles scored the game's first goal as Jenna Entsminger scored off a feed from Annika Benson to give BC a 1-0 edge less than four minutes into the contest. The Gophers matched that goal with one from Emily Burk at the 9:13 mark to tie the game, but Bridgewater took the lead again almost immediately as Benson scored with an assist from Grace Pietro to take a 2-1 lead. The next five minutes ticked away without a goal before Burk got her second of the game to tie things up a 2-2 with 3:44 on the clock. The Eagles were able to get another one before the end of the opening quarter as Benson scored her second in a man-up situation to give BC a 3-2 edge after the first 15 minutes.
  • Halfway through the second quarter, the Crimson & Gold doubled its lead as Pietro fired home a man-up goal after receiving a pass from Aunnie Hacker to make it a 4-2 game. Hacker scored one of her own exactly four minutes later to increase the lead to 5-3 with 3:57 left in the half. The Gophers scored less than a minute later as Katherine Luetgens found the back of the cage after taking a pass from Amelia Lazzini to get to the halftime score of 5-3 in favor of the Eagles.
  • Entsminger continued the scoring in the second half as she scored with 7:34 to go in the third with a helper from Hacker to double up the visitors 6-3. Goucher continued to battle to stay in the ball game as Makayla Batts scored with 6:38 left to keep a two-goal deficit, but Paige Mayers was able to score to push the Eagles up 7-4. One more goal came in the third as Kaity Petersheim struck to send the game to the final period with BC in front, 8-4.
  • The fourth quarter was all Bridgewater as Entsminter scored off a pass from Benson to increase the lead to five goals. Petersheim followed with her second of the game at the 9:50 mark as Delaney Kerns got into the scoring action with a free-position goal at 1:29 to set the score at 11-4. Mayers added one more late goal as she scored with under seven seconds left in the contest to put Goucher away, 12-4.
